1. Minimally invasive cardiorespiratory monitoring and lung recruitment manoeuvres. Studies in animals and humans
Sammanfattning : Background: The maintenance of adequate oxygen delivery is essential to preserve organ function. The circulatory and respiratory systems interact closely to accomplish this. Optimising the function of these systems is of fundamental importance in critically ill patients. This requires adequate monitoring techniques. LÄS MER
2. Nitric oxide production by the intestinal mucosa during hypoperfusion
Sammanfattning : The present thesis is based on the concept that gastrointestinal blood hypoperfusion is a common phenomenon associated with critical illness. Furthermore, the development of the multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) is proposed to be initiated by gastrointestinal mucosal barrier dysfunction, allowing intestinal luminal contents to penetrate into the tissue and activate a systemic inflammatory response. 3. CARDIOTHORACIC TRAUMA: A Scandinavian Perspective
Sammanfattning : Background: Trauma in general is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, and causes more loss of productive years than ischemic heart disease and malignancy together. Cardiothoracic trauma occurs in 60% of multitrauma patients and is 2-3 times more common than intra-abdominal visceral injuries. LÄS MER
4. The gastrointestinal tract in cardiac anaesthesia and intensive care : Clinical and experimental studies
Sammanfattning : Gastrointestinal (GI) complications after cardiac surgery have a substantial impact on outcome. The aims were to investigate the frequency of, and methods for detecting, GI dysfunction after cardiac surgery and its relation to outcome, and the impact of vasoactive drugs on the GI tract in experimental cardiogenic shock. 5. Advanced radiological imaging in patients treated with Extracorporeal Memebrane Oxygenation
Sammanfattning : Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is the use of a modified heart-lung machine to support life during severe acute cardiac and/or respiratory failure. Patients on ECMO are at high risk for complications due to the severe underlying disease and to the ECMO procedure itself. LÄS MER
