1. Capacity Pooling in Healthcare Systems
Sammanfattning : Healthcare systems are facing a continuously increasing demand for care while healthcare providers express a need for additional capacity. However, increased capacity in healthcare systems will not be a sufficient option in the near future, and previous research has found a need to improve healthcare capacity planning and management. 2. Measured and modelled long-term effects of whole-tree harvest : impact on soil and surface water acid-base status in boreal forests
Sammanfattning : This thesis examines the impact of whole-tree harvest (WTH) on soils and surface waters acid-base status in coniferous forests compared with conventional harvesting (CH). A combination of field observations (up to four decades) and dynamic modelling was used to describe the impact on soil calcium (Ca²⁺) pools and surface water acid neutralizing capacity (ANC). LÄS MER
3. Sulfur cycling in Swedish arable soils : a chemical perspective
Sammanfattning : Sulfur (S) is an essential plant nutrient. Decreased S deposition in combination with a switch to high-analysis N/P-fertilizers has increased the need for S fertilization. Thus, soil research directed at understanding soil sulfur properties and processes has intensified. LÄS MER
4. Distribution and Biogeochemical Cycling of Arsenic In Grey and Brown Sand Aquifers in the Bengal Delta Plains (India)
Sammanfattning : An elevated level of Arsenic (As) in aquifers from India and Bangladesh affecting the human health has been widely reported since the late 1980s. The thesis aim is to investigate the present status of As contamination and biogeochemical cycling with direct role of diverse indigenous bacterial communities in As cycling in the Bengal Delta Plain (BDP) aquifers in Nadia district, West Bengal (India). 5. Natural and human-induced carbon storage variability in seagrass meadows
Sammanfattning : Seagrasses are considered highly important CO2 sinks, with the capacity to store substantial quantities of organic carbon in the living biomass and sediments, and thereby acting as a buffer against climate change. In this thesis, I have studied carbon storage variability in temperate and tropical seagrass habitats and identified factors influencing this variation. LÄS MER
