  1. 11. Interplay between inflammation and calcification in cardiovascular diseases

    Författare :Nikolaos-Taxiarchis Skenteris; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Cardiovascular calcification has been linked to all-cause mortality and is a broadly adopted predictor of cardiovascular (CV) events. Rather than a mere by-product of the changing disease environment, calcification impacts actively the disease progression and pathogenesis as it predominates both in early- and late-stages, through mediating tissue biomechanical destabilisation and directly impacting tissue inflammation. 2. 12. Aortic valve calcification : in vivo and ex vivo evaluation

    Författare :Mohamed Yousry; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Aortic valve calcification (AVC) or thickening is found in around one fifth of the general population between 65-75 years of age and increasingly thereafter. The process of aortic valve thickening and calcification is not only an aging (wear and tear) process of the valve leaflets. It is now considered to be closely related to atherosclerosis. LÄS MER

  3. 13. Molecular mechanisms of inflammation and calcification in aortic valve stenosis

    Författare :Edit Nagy; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Aortic valve stenosis is a slowly progressive disorder with a spectrum of disease ranging from aortic sclerosis to severe destroyed valvular architecture leading to critical outflow obstruction. The diseased valve is characterized by inflammation, as an initiating event, pathological remodeling of extracellular matrix and pronounced calcification, which all eventually cause restricted leaflet mobility. 4. 14. Seawater pH as a Controlling Factor in Macroalgal Calcification and Photosynthesis

    Författare :Immaculate Sware Semesi; Mats Björk; Sven Beer; O. P. Rui Santos; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Calcareous macroalgae; CO2; mussels; pH; seagrasses; tropical lagoons; Plant physiology; Växtfysiologi; Plant Physiology; växtfysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Biological calcification and photosynthesis are important processes with a great influence on both structure and function of oceanic ecosystems. The pH of the seawater has a strong influence on both these processes and therefore the impacts of different pH levels on calcareous macroalgae were investigated in laboratory and field experiments at Chwaka and Fumba Bays in Zanzibar, Tanzania. 5. 15. The role of smooth muscle cells in calcification of atherosclerotic plaques

    Författare :Till Seime; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Calcification (CALC) is a predominant feature of late-stage cardiovascular disease (CVD) but responsible mechanisms and its contribution to the risk of clinical events remain unclear. Formation of highly mineralized extracellular matrix (ECM) leads to progressive aortic valve stenosis (AVS) and has been identified as a surrogate marker for atherosclerotic disease burden. LÄS MER
