1. Synthesis of Novel Homoserine Analogues - Towards t he Development of Substrate-based Peptide Inhibitors of cAMP-dependent Protein Kinase
Sammanfattning : Protein kinases are enzymes that via phosphorylation of proteins/peptides regulate most aspects of cell functions and physiology. The enzymes transfer a -phosphoryl group from ATP to hydroxyl groups of Ser, Thr and Tyr residues in their substrates. LÄS MER
2. The Adenovirus L4-33K Protein : A Key Regulator of Virus-specific Alternative Splicing
Sammanfattning : Adenoviruses have been extensively studied in the field of gene regulation, since their genes are subjected to a tightly controlled temporal expression during the virus lifetime. The early-to-late shift in adenoviral gene expression distinguishes two completely different programs in gene expression. LÄS MER
3. Regulation of steroidogenesis : cAMP-dependent transcription in adrenocortical cells
Sammanfattning : Optimal steroid hormone output from the adrenal cortex depends on the peptide hormone ACTH which elicits its effect by increasing the intracellular levels of the second messenger cAMP, and a subsequent activation of the cAMP-dependent protein kinase. An important aspect of ACTH action is the ability of this hormone to increase transcription of a group of genes that encodes the steroid hydroxylases, enzymes that catalyze the conversion of cholesterol to biologically active steroids. 4. Cyclic nucleotide signalling systems in vascular smooth muscle cells and immune system cells with special reference to phosphodiesterases PDE3 and PDE4
Sammanfattning : The cyclic nucleotide signalling systems are important in vascular smooth muscle and in the immune system, and are of interest from a pharmacological point of view. Drugs which interfere with the cyclic nucleotide levels have profound effects on heart, blood vessels and airways and have actual or potential use in several important diseases, such as heart failure, hypertension, arteriosclerosis, asthma and autoimmune diseases. 5. Signal transduction and calcium sensitivity of smooth muscle contraction
Sammanfattning : Smooth muscles are components of several physiologically important organs and often involved in disease. Smooth muscle contraction is regulated by variations in intracellular [Ca2+]; increased levels activate the myosin light chain kinase (MLCK) which phosphorylates myosin and initiates contraction.
