1. Selection, Maternal Effects and Inbreeding in Reindeer Husbandry
Sammanfattning : In extensive grazing systems where several owners’ flocks are allowed to mix, selection strategies will also interact, due to gene flow between flocks. The aim of the thesis was to analyse breeding schemes in terms of genetic gain and rate of inbreeding (?F), given the complexity of ownership and interaction of selection strategies within a mixing reindeer population. 2. Apple genomics for the Swedish breeding programme
Sammanfattning : Swedish apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) cultivation is a niche market setting specific requirements on new apple cultivars. Notably, the growing season is short, especially in central and northern Sweden, and there are relatively few pesticides available, making resistance to diseases important. LÄS MER
3. Breeding programme and infrastructure : the case of Red Maasai sheep in Kenya
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to study potential breeding strategies for indigenous livestock in Eastern and Southern Africa under low input production systems. The thesis covered a study of the status of supportive infrastructure for use of animal genetic resources. LÄS MER
4. Genetic evaluation of Swedish warmblood horses
Sammanfattning : The main breeding objective for the Swedish Warmblood horse (SWB) is to produce competitive horses for show jumping or dressage. The aim of this thesis was to provide information to improve the breeding programme for SWB by investigating the usefulness of different sources of data for genetic evaluation and by studying the realised selection practices and genetic trends of the SWB population. 5. Magnetic map sense in animals: effects of geographic and magnetic displacements
Sammanfattning : Migration research is a large and diverse field and in my thesis I have focused on the impact of geomagnetic cues on animal orientation, navigation and migratory fuelling. Several animal species from widely different taxa possess the ability to sense and make use of geomagnetic information during migratory or homing events. LÄS MER
