Sammanfattning : Background: The allergy preventive effect of breast-feeding against the development of allergy is controversial and some of this controversy may be due to differences in the composition of breast milk between different mothers.Aim: To analyse IgA, cytokine and chemokines levels in human milk and relate the findings to matemal allergy and to development of atopic disease and IgA production in the infants, and furthermore, to assess the effects of breast milk on CBMC cytokine production. 23. Prediction and prevention of allergy in infants and children
Sammanfattning : Atopic disposition is hereditary with varying penetrance. A carefully obtained family history of atopic disease (FH) is useful as a predictor but has low sensitivity. Other tested predictors such as cord blood (CB) IgE, counts of different CB cell elements and combinations of predictors all have a similar, or even lower sensitivity and specificity. LÄS MER

Sammanfattning : This thesis describes studies of prevention of mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of HIV-1 in breast-feeding populations in sub-Saharan Africa by perinatal and postnatal prophylactic antiretroviral therapy (ART) of mothers and infants. The acceptability of HIV counseling and testing in pregnant women and the mortality among HIV-1-infected women during 2 years after delivery was also studied. LÄS MER
25. Feeding the very low birth weight infant : short and long term effects of tube feeding methods in early postnatal life
Sammanfattning : The overall aim of this thesis was to investigate short term effects of enteral feeding methods, continuous versus intermittent bolus feeding in very low birth weight infants on gastro intestinal tolerance and growth (I) and, behavioural responses of stress during feeding (II) in early postnatal life.
