1. Modification of flavonoid content and photosynthesis by ultraviolet-B radiation. Atrazine-tolerant and -sensitive ultivars of Brassica napus
Sammanfattning : Levels of ultraviolet-B (UV-B, 280-320 nm) radiation reaching the Earth´s surface increase due to stratospheric ozone depletion. In this thesis the effect of enhanced UV-B radiation was studied on the atrazine-tolerant mutant Stallion, susceptible to photoinhibition, and the atrazine-sensitive cultivar Paroll of Brassica napus (oilseed rape). 2. Role of cadmium and ultraviolet-B radiation in plants, Influence on photosynthesis and element content in two species of Brassicaceae
Sammanfattning : Plants are exposed to many different stress factors during their lifetime, often more than one factor at a time, which highlights the importance of research regarding interaction among stress factors. Cadmium and ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-B, 280-315 nm) are two potential stress factors in the environment, which have gained increased interest due to atmospheric pollution. LÄS MER
3. Pollination processes - maternal and offspring performance
Sammanfattning : Pollination is one of the most important factors determining the reproductive success of plants. This thesis examines processes associated to varying pollination, with focus on plant responses. The first aim was to examine the possibility and constraints for short-term evolution of flower size in Raphanus raphanistrum. LÄS MER
4. Studies on the regulation of the Napin napA promoter by ABI3, bZIP and bHLH transcription factors
Sammanfattning : The B3-domain transcription factor ABI3 is a major regulator of gene expression of seed maturation during Arabidopsis embryogenesis. The napA gene encodes for a Brassica napus 2S storage protein specifically expressed in the embryo during the early and mid-maturation phase (MAT program). LÄS MER
5. Studies of plant interactions with other organisms to understand Bacillus mediated stress management
Sammanfattning : The naturally evolved plant defense system is not always effective, due to adaptations among the attackers. Crop protective chemicals have many negative effects on the environment. Ecosystem services, like beneficial microorganisms, are of great interest for plant stress management in sustainable crop production. LÄS MER
