  1. 21. Long-term cognitive outcome of childhood traumatic brain injury

    Författare :Catherine Aaro Jonsson; Ann-Charlotte Smedler; Ingrid Emanuelson; Erland Hjelmquist; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; traumatic brain injury; childhood; adolescence; neurosurgical care; cognitive development; executive functions; memory; verbal functions; long-term outcome; recovery; rehabilitation; follow-up; cluster analysis; Psychology; Psykologi; psykologi; Psychology;

    Sammanfattning : There is limited knowledge of cognitive outcome extending beyond 5 years after childhood traumatic brain injury, CTBI. The main objectives of this thesis were to investigate cognitive outcome at 6-14 years after CTBI, and to evaluate if advancements in the neurosurgical care, starting 1992, did influence long-term outcome and early epidemiology. Sammanfattning : Traumatic brain injury (TBI), mainly caused by road-traffic accidents and falls, is a leading cause of mortality. Survivors often display debilitating motor, sensory and cognitive symptoms, leading to reduced quality of life and a profound economic burden to society. LÄS MER

  3. 23. Neurointensive Care of Children with Severe Traumatic Brain Injury : Studies of barbiturate coma treatment, intracranial compliance, pressure autoregulation and optimal cerebral perfusion pressure

    Sammanfattning : Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is among the most common causes of death and acquired disability during childhood. Management guidelines for pediatric patients are usually extrapolated from adults. Specific pediatric studies are warranted to improve the TBI management in children. LÄS MER

  4. 24. The role of the alpha 7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor in inflammation and brain injury

    Författare :Maria Hammarlund; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; alpha 7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor; inflammation; brain injury; CHRNA7; CHRFAM7A; stroke; hypoxia ischemia; neonatal encephalopathy; human; PBMC;

    Sammanfattning : The alpha 7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (α7nAChR) are expressed in the nervous system as well as on peripheral immune cells where it participates in the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway. Inflammation is a common component in the pathology of many diseases and injuries, including brain damage. LÄS MER

    Sammanfattning : The overall aim of the research presented here was to expand the knowledge on metabolic course and nutritional outcome in patients with severe traumatic brain injury and to analyze the use and accuracy of different methods of assessment. Study I, a systematic review of 30 articles demonstrated consistent data on increased metabolic rate, of catabolism and of upper gastrointestinal intolerance in the majority of the patients during early post injury period.
