6. Translational Aspects of Blood-Brain Barrier Transport and Brain Distribution of Drugs in Health and Disease
Sammanfattning : A high unmet medical need in the area of CNS diseases coincides with high failure rates in CNS drug development. Efficient treatment of CNS disease is constrained by limited entrance of drugs into the brain owing to the blood-brain barrier (BBB), which separates brain from blood. LÄS MER
7. Signal transduction in the brain : modulation of receptor-mediated inositol phospholipid breakdown by potassium and fluoride ions
Sammanfattning : Neurotransmitter receptor types mediating the generation of intracellular signals are of two types; ligand-gated ion channels and G protein coupled receptors. The effector enzyme phosphoinositide-specific phospholipase C (PLC) is modulated by stimulation of G protein coupled receptors, leading to an increased breakdown of inositol phospholipids ("Ptdlns breakdown"). 8. Modeling glioblastoma heterogeneity to decipher its biology
Sammanfattning : Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most common and lethal form of primary brain tumor that mainly affects adults. GBM displays remarkable intra- and inter-tumoral heterogeneity and contains a subpopulation of cells named glioma stem cells that is believed to be responsible for tumor maintenance, progression and recurrence. 9. Impact of Tissue Characteristics on Radio-Frequency Lesioning and Navigation in the Brain : Simulation, experimental and clinical studies
Sammanfattning : Radio-Frequency (RF) lesioning, or RF ablation, is a method that uses high frequency currents for thermal coagulation of pathological tissue or signal pathways. The current is delivered from an electrode, which also contains a temperature sensor permitting control of the current at a desired target temperature. In the brain, RF lesioning can e.g. LÄS MER
10. Segmentation and Visualisation of Human Brain Structures
Sammanfattning : In this thesis the focus is mainly on the development of segmentation techniques for human brain structures and of the visualisation of such structures. The images of the brain are both anatomical images (magnet resonance imaging (MRI) and autoradigraphy) and functional images that show blood flow (functional magnetic imaging (fMRI), positron emission tomography (PET), and single photon emission tomograpy (SPECT)).
