16. Development and preclinical assessment of novel therapies for Epilepsy. Exploring the potential of human-derived cell lines and glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor for network inhibition
Sammanfattning : Epilepsy is one of the leading neurological disorders affecting not only patients who suffer from seizures but also people around them and society in general. The striking one third of patients not responding to pharmacological treatments implies the necessity of developing alternative options for controlling seizures in these individuals. LÄS MER
17. Neurotrophic signalling by GDNF and its receptors
Sammanfattning : Many investigators have sought a polypeptide which would alleviate the neuronal loss associated with Parkinson's disease--specifically dopaminergic neurons of the ventral mesencephalon. The survival of this population of neurons has been known for some time to be promoted by soluble factors present in the conditioned media of glial cell lines. LÄS MER
18. Neurotrophic factors and their receptors structure-function relationships and signalling mechanisms
Sammanfattning : Background: The development, survival and maintenance of the vertebrate nervous system requires the continuous supply of a set of polypeptides termed neurotrophic factors. Among these, the neurotrophins (NTs) and members of the transforming growth factor-B (TGF-B) superfamily have raised substantial hopes for future clinical applications. LÄS MER
19. Neurotrophic and immune regulatory factors in neuroinflammation
Sammanfattning : Inflammatory reactions in the nervous system act as a double-edged sword. On the one hand, neuroinflammation can have very devastating effects on the nervous system, leading to neurological dysfunction. LÄS MER
20. Gene therapy in epilepsy: neuropeptides and neurotrophic factors
Sammanfattning : Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is the most common form of epilepsy among adult patients, and the most problematic one as seizures cannot be controlled by currently available drugs in 30 % of patients. Gene therapy based on overexpression of endogenous anti-epileptic agents such as the neuropeptide galanin and the glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) represents a promising new approach for treatment of TLE.
