  1. 1. On the cholinergic c-bouton

    Författare :Johan Hellström; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Acetylcholine; Brainstem; Immunohistochemistry; In situ hybridization; Motoneurons; Muscarinic receptors; Rat; Spinal cord; Ventral horn cells;

    Sammanfattning : The cholinergic C-bouton is a large nerve terminal type exclusively contacting motoneuron cell somata and proximal dendrites. C-boutons are characterized by subsurface cisterns found beneath the postsynaptic membrane, which is an exclusive feature for these nerve terminals. The origin of the C-boutons is unknown. LÄS MER

  2. 2. On age related changes in axons and glia of the central nervous system

    Författare :Susanna Kullberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Aging; synaptic input; spinal cord; hippocampus; amino acid neurotransmitters; astrocyte; microglia; oligodendroglia; C bouton; cholinergic; monoaminergic; cytokine;

    Sammanfattning : A growing body of evidence shows that phenotypic changes including axon aberrations, rather than loss of neurons, account for behavioral impairments during aging. The present thesis was undertaken to investigate the occurrence of axon aberrations in relation to transmitter identity, glial reaction and sensorimotor disturbances. LÄS MER

  3. 3. On amino acid neurotransmitters in the spinal cord motor nuclei

    Författare :Göran Örnung; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :neurotransmitter; aspartate; glutamate; GABA. glycine; homocysteate; taurine; ultrastructure; freeze-substitution; immunocytochemistry; bouton; synaptic input; motoneuron; strech reflex; spinal cord; cat. rat;

    Sammanfattning : Using pre- and post-embedding immunocytochemistry, the distribution of six amino acid neurotransmitter candidates, with special reference to y-amino-butyric acid (GABA), glycine and glutamate was examined in boutons apposing somata and dendrites in the lumbar motor nuclei of the cat spinal cord. The monosynaptic connection between muscle spindle I a afferents and motoneurons regarding content of neuroactive amino acid and complement of amino acid receptors in the postsynaptic membrane was studied in the rat. 4. 4. Circadian plasticity in the neuromuscular junction of Drosophila melanogaster

    Författare :Kerstin Mehnert; Rafael Cantera; Charlotte Helfrich-Förster; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurobiology; Neurobiologi; funktionell morfologi; Functional Zoomorphology;

    Sammanfattning : A biological clock exists in many organisms and controls rhythmic behaviors such as the activity pattern of locomotion. At the cellular level, it has been shown that circadian rhythms in the morphology of neurons exist in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Morphological and immunohistochemical studies on the organisation of sacral motoneurons

    Författare :Vania Ramirez-Leon; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :spinal cord; dendrites; synaptic input; aging;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to study pre- and postsynaptic elements during postnatal development and aging. Motoneurons from two adjacent sacral motor nuclei in the cat spinal cord were investigated: the motoneurons innervating intrinsic foot-sole muscles (dorsolateral motor nucleus; DLN) and the motoneurons innervating striated perineal muscles (Onufs nucleus, ventrolateral motor nucleus; VLN).
