1. Bone turnover markers and prediction of bone loss in elderly women
Sammanfattning : Around 70,000 osteoporosis-related fractures occur in Sweden annually and approximately half of the women in western world will sustain a fragility fracture after the age of 50 years. Fracture preventive efforts require the identification of individuals who are at high risk. LÄS MER
2. Vitamin D, bone turnover markers and hCAP-18 in children with hemato-oncological diseases
Sammanfattning : Children with hemato-oncological diseases may have significant skeletal morbidities. Vitamin D is essential for the maintenance of skeletal health and may also be important for immunological functions and cancer outcomes. LÄS MER
3. Bone Mineral Density Determination in Children. Evaluation of a novel method and application to Duchenne muscular dystrophy
Sammanfattning : Aims: The overall aims of this thesis were to evaluate the dual-energy X-ray and laser (DXL) method for bone densitometry measurements of the calcaneus in children, to provide reference data for bone mineral density (BMD) in the heel bone in young children and to apply the DXL technique to patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and conduct a survey about bone health of DMD patients. Study populations and methods: The DXL Calscan method was modified and adapted for measurements in children and applied to bone densitometry in all subsequent studies. LÄS MER
4. Bone density, bone geometry and bone development in young men - the importance of pubertal timing and fracture history
Sammanfattning : Background and objective: Peak bone mass, the maximal bone mass attained in young adulthood, is an important factor of the lifetime risk of developing osteoporosis. The aim of this thesis was to study the development of bone mineral density (BMD) and bone geometry around the time of peak bone mass in men, and also to investigate the association between pubertal timing, fracture history, bone turnover markers and BMD and bone geometry in young men. 5. Molecular and clinical studies of cartilage and bone macromolecules in arthritis
Sammanfattning : The pathogenesis of inflammatory arthritides include synovial inflammation and joint tissue destruction. Tissue destruction has traditionally been regarded a consequence of inflammation, but recent observations indicate that the processes are not always closely linked and may proceed uncoupled. LÄS MER
