1. Risk factors for bone fragility and fracture in postmenopausal women
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to evaluate risk factors for bone fragility and fractures in postmenopausal women in a long-term perspective. The study period spanned from the age of 48 to age 82 and is thus unique in its length. The studied sample was homogeneous and consisted of 390 north European women from a population-based cohort. 2. Bone turnover markers and prediction of bone loss in elderly women
Sammanfattning : Around 70,000 osteoporosis-related fractures occur in Sweden annually and approximately half of the women in western world will sustain a fragility fracture after the age of 50 years. Fracture preventive efforts require the identification of individuals who are at high risk. LÄS MER
3. Bone Mineral Density Determination in Children. Evaluation of a novel method and application to Duchenne muscular dystrophy
Sammanfattning : Aims: The overall aims of this thesis were to evaluate the dual-energy X-ray and laser (DXL) method for bone densitometry measurements of the calcaneus in children, to provide reference data for bone mineral density (BMD) in the heel bone in young children and to apply the DXL technique to patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and conduct a survey about bone health of DMD patients. Study populations and methods: The DXL Calscan method was modified and adapted for measurements in children and applied to bone densitometry in all subsequent studies. LÄS MER
4. Bone mineral density in pediatric inflammatory bowel disease
Sammanfattning : Low bone mineral density (BMD) has been highlighted as a potential problem in children with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which is one of the most common chronic childhood diseases in the westernized world. The mechanisms behind reduced BMD in pediatric IBD are still not completely understood, but several factors that influence bone mineralization have been discussed. LÄS MER
5. Bone mass in young adults - determinants and fracture prediction
Sammanfattning : Bone mass in adolescents and young adults was studied with regard to its age-related change and its determinants. Methodological aspects of bone mass measurements and their ability to predict future fractures were investigated. LÄS MER
