  1. 1. Blood exposure in health care : health care workers' and patients' experiences

    Författare :Ulla-Britt Lymer; Barbro Isaksson; Bengt Richt; Vivi-Anne Sundquist; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Blood-exposure; needle-stick; compliance; universal precautions; balancing; quaIity care; nursing; patients conceptions; grounded theory; phenomenography; MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Sammanfattning : The general aim of this thesis was to describe and analyse health care workers' blood-exposure incidents, protective measures, and the motives behind decision making about risks and protective measures. The aim was also to procure knowledge about patients' conceptions about their care, and if precautions taken by the health care workers were included in quaiity care. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Engineering more efficient multipotent mesenchymal stromal (stem) cells for systemic delivery as cellular therapy

    Författare :Guido Moll; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :multipotent mesenchymal stromal stem cell;

    Sammanfattning : Do mesenchymal progenitor cells naturally circulate in vivo? Are they fundamentally compatible with blood? What mechanism allows them to be in contact with blood? How do we make therapeutic cells with blood-compatible properties? Can we optimise their survival and therapeutic function upon systemic delivery? How should we best isolate and condition therapeutic multipotent mesenchymal stromal (stem) cells (MSCs) before infusion, to achieve an optimum and sustainable clinical response in patients? This thesis covers many aspects related to these questions. It describes how MSCs interact with the instant blood-mediated inflammatory reaction (IBMIR) upon infusion. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Interactions between whole blood and biomaterial surfaces. With focus on the respiratory burst of adhering neutrophils as an early sign of cytotoxicity

    Författare :Noushin Yahyapour; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :wettability; titanium; glass; peritoneal dialysis fluid; surface-adhering neutrophils; respiratory burst; thrombin; kallikrein; complement C5b-9;

    Sammanfattning : Although a vast array of materials is used to augment or replace a natural function in the human body, many of them cause side-effects or may be rejected. The growing need for more biocompatible devices has been accompanied by an increase in new materials. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Regional oxygenation in cardiac surgery. Influence of temperature, pump flow and insulin

    Författare :Lena Lindholm; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cardiopulmonary bypass; cardiac surgery; regional oxygenation; venous oxygenation; splanchnic oxygenation; insulin; vasodilation; temperature; pump flow;

    Sammanfattning : Surgical trauma triggers neural, endocrine and inflammatory reactions with subsequent alterations in systemic and regional blood flow, blood pressure and metabolism. These changes are detectable after all major surgical procedures but are often more pronounced after cardiac surgery, probably because of blood exposure to artificial surfaces of the heart lung machine, temperature modulation (e. 5. 5. Fat contamination of pericardial suction blood in cardiac surgery : clinical and experimental studies in perspectives of transfusion logistics

    Författare :Micael Appelblad; Gunnar Engström; Krister Lindmark; Anders Jeppsson; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Surgery; blood transfusion; cardiopulmonary bypass; pericardial suction blood; fat contamination; lipid microemboli; density separation; surface adsorption; Kirurgi; Surgery; kirurgi;

    Sammanfattning : Introduction: During cardiac surgery aided by cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) the autotransfusion of pericardial suction blood (PSB) is regarded mandatory to limit allogeneic blood exposure. PSB is however proposed as a source of lipid microemboli and to contribute to brain damage. LÄS MER
