11. Energy metabolic failure within the arterial wall in atherosclerosis
Sammanfattning : Atherosclerosis is a disease that affects large and medium sized arteries. The majority of deaths in a Western population can be directly attributed to complications of this disease. Although research efforts have been vast, the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying atherosclerosis are not fully understood. LÄS MER
12. Vanadate and Peroxovanadate Complexes of Biomedical Relevance : A speciation approach with focus on diabetes
Sammanfattning : Diabetes mellitus is one of the most threatening epidemics of modern times with rapidly increasing incidence. Vanadium and peroxovanadium compounds have been shown to exert insulin–like actions and, in contrast to insulin, are orally applicable. However, problems with side–effects and toxicity remain. 13. Circulatory Failure and Outcome in Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest
Sammanfattning : Circulatory failure is considered one of the entities of the post cardiac arrest syndrome contributing to poor outcome. It is reported at 15-70% of all patients successfully resuscitated from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). LÄS MER
14. Roller skis' rolling resistance and grip characteristics : influences on physiological and performance measures in cross-country skiers
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to investigate roller ski characteristics; classical and freestyle roller skis’ rolling resistance coefficients (μR) and classical style roller skis’ static friction coefficients (μS), and to study the influence of different μR and μS on cross-country skiers’ performance and both physiological and biomechanical indices. The aim was also to study differences in skiing economy and efficiency between recreational skiers, female and male junior and senior elite cross-country skiers. LÄS MER
15. Identification of the high risk hip fracture patients
Sammanfattning : Background: Hip fractures are common in older individuals entailing considerable risk of morbidity and mortality. Instruments are needed to enhance risk stratification of hip fracture patients. There is limited knowledge of the role of biomarkers as risk prognosticators for mortality in hip fracture patients.
