21. Metabolic monitoring in patients undergoing cardiac surgery using intravascular microdialysis
Sammanfattning : Critically ill patients and patients undergoing cardiac surgery often experience hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia and glycemic variability (fluctuating blood glucose concentrations), all of which have been associated with adverse outcomes. Glycemic control aimed at avoiding both hyper- and hypoglycemia as well as at minimizing glycemic variability has been shown to be beneficial in these patients. LÄS MER
22. Hemodynamic and cardiometabolic studies in patients with distributive circulatory dysfunctions : with special reference to the effects of the beta-1-adrenoreceptor agonist prenalterol
Sammanfattning : A total of 49 patients were studied, using invasive hemodynamic techniques with systemic arterial, pulmonary artery and right atrial pressure recordings together with thermodilution cardiac output determinations. Sixteen of the patients were also subjected to cardiometabolic studies, using measurement of coronary sinus blood flow by the continuous thermodilution technique and analyses of oxygen content and lactate concentration in the systemic and coronary circulation. 23. Skeletal muscle metabolism in patients with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease : A study of carbohydrate and fat metabolism
Sammanfattning : In chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) deterioration of skeletal muscle metabolism is reported in both respiratory and non-respiratory muscles. This deterioration may contribute to both the development of respiratory failure and general disability often seen in severe COPD patients. LÄS MER
24. Severe Hemodilution - Clinical and Experimental Studies
Sammanfattning : In children, it is often desirable to minimize allogenic blood transfusion, and this thesis explores the physiology of an alternative method of managing perioperative blood loss: hemodilution with Ringer´s dextran. Methods Clinical studies: Arterial pressure, superior caval venous oxygen saturation (ScvO2) and blood lactate concentration (L) were studied during bone marrow harvesting (BMH) on 23 occasions in 19 children, 1-17 years of age, with healthy hearts and lungs. 25. Insulin resistance in skeletal muscle. With special reference to interstitial insulin and glycerol
Sammanfattning : Insulin resistance is a central feature of type 2 diabetes and obesity and is associated with cardiovascular disease. In insulin-resistant muscle, the insulin-mediated glucose uptake is decreased. The delivery of insulin to the interstitial fluid of human skeletal muscle has previously not been investigated. LÄS MER
