11. Physiological and biomechanical aspects of rifle carriage during biathlon skiing
Sammanfattning : Biathlon is an endurance-based winter sport that combines crosscountry (XC) skiing with rifle marksmanship. While skiing, biathletes carry the rifle (weighing ≥ 3.5 kg) on their backs. However, research regarding the effects of rifle carriage in biathlon is lacking. LÄS MER
12. The importance of body-mass exponent optimization for evaluation of performance capability in cross-country skiing
Sammanfattning : Introduction Performance in cross-country skiing is influenced by the skier’s ability to continuously produce propelling forces and force magnitude in relation to the net external forces. A surrogate indicator of the “power supply” in cross-country skiing would be a physiological variable that reflects an important performance-related capability, whereas the body mass itself is an indicator of the “power demand” experienced by the skier. 13. The quality of red blood cells and platelets intended for transfusion : Opportunities for improvements
Sammanfattning : A new, automated technique for collection and instant preparation of blood components has been developed. The device enables the combined collection of red cells (250 mL) and plasma (475 mL). No adverse effects were seen in the donors. The blood components were of good quality. LÄS MER
14. On microvascular blood flow assessment with the new microdialysis urea clearance technique
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to develop and evaluate a new way of monitoring blood flow with microdialysis. A thin catheter consisting of a semipermeable membrane is implanted in the tissue being studied. LÄS MER
15. Microdialysis and Intensive Care. Clinical and experimental studies
Sammanfattning : Microdialysis was used to monitor local concentrations of energy metabolites in different organs, and to study the pharmacokinetics of morphine over the blood-brain barrier in intact and injured brain tissue in conditions treated in the Intensive Care Unit. After major abdominal or thoracoabdominal surgery, postoperative thoracic epidural analgesia resulted in higher glycerol concentrations in the deltoid subcutaneous adipose tissue, implying increased lipolysis, on the third postoperative day as compared to intravenous infusion of morphine, possibly due to a locally increased sympathetic tone.
