1. Blood Culture Negative Endocarditis
Sammanfattning : The lethal disease infective endocarditis (IE) is caused by microorganisms that attack heart valves. Early diagnosis and identification of the causative agents are important for the choice of treatment. Optimal treatment may be difficult to achieve if blood culture negative endocarditis (CNE) is present. LÄS MER
2. Clinical applications of acoustophoresis in blood based diagnostics
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, acoustofluidics has been used to process blood samples as a sample preparation step prior to biomarker detection. This is often required as the large amount of blood cells otherwise can interfere with the detection method. Acoustofluidics means moving particles or cells with acoustic forces within microfluidic channels. LÄS MER
3. Optimisation of diagnostic PCR a study of PCR inhibitors in blood and sample pretreatment
Sammanfattning : PCR is widely employed as a rapid, sensitive and specific molecular diagnostic technique in clinical diagnosis, environmental investigations and for monitoring biotechnical processes. However, the full potential of diagnostic PCR is limited, in part, by the presence of PCR-inhibitory substances in biological samples. LÄS MER
4. Blood exposure in health care : health care workers' and patients' experiences
Sammanfattning : The general aim of this thesis was to describe and analyse health care workers' blood-exposure incidents, protective measures, and the motives behind decision making about risks and protective measures. The aim was also to procure knowledge about patients' conceptions about their care, and if precautions taken by the health care workers were included in quaiity care. LÄS MER
5. Assessment of eosinophil degranulation in allergic diseases and experimental models
Sammanfattning : In allergic disorders, the eosinophilic granulocytes migrate to affected tissues and release granule proteins with cytotoxic, immunoregulatory, and remodeling-promoting properties. Given that degranulation is reflected by a loss in eosinophil granule density of living cells, or by cell membrane rupture and release of intact granules, these morphological changes may represent a biomarker of the allergic disease.
