1. From Idea to Norm : Promoting Conflict Prevention
Sammanfattning : This study is concerned with tracing the process of how conflict prevention is moving from the realm of ideas to the field of action. Why is it that, despite historical as well as recent evidence of the infeasibility to prevent wars, the idea of conflict prevention has resurfaced to meet the challenge of the new wars of the post-Cold War era? The study investigates whether the growing interest in preventing the outbreak of violent conflicts marks the coming of age of conflict prevention as an international norm able to induce preventive practices. 2. Violence prevention and management in acute psychiatric care : aspects of nursing practice
Sammanfattning : Aim: The general aim of this thesis was to explore and evaluate different aspects of nursing practice in relation to prediction, prevention and management of patient violence in acute psychiatric care. The specific aims were: to evaluate the short-term predictive capacity of the violence risk assessment instrument Brøset Violence Checklist (BVC) when used by nurses in a psychiatric intensive care unit (study I), to compare the occurrences of coercive interventions and violence-related staff injuries before and after a two-year nursing development and violence prevention intervention (study II), to describe aspects of the caring approaches used by nurses in acute psychiatric intensive care units (study III) and finally (in study IV) to test the hypothesis that staff training according to the ‘Bergen model’ has a significant positive influence on the violence prevention and management climate in psychiatric inpatient wards, as perceived by patients and staff. 4. Effect of IL-1beta secretion on lymphoid tissue and on antitumor immune responses
Sammanfattning : Interleukin (IL)-1beta is one of the most pleiotropic and potent cytokines, produced predominantly by activated monocytes and macrophages. IL-1 plays an important role in normal immunoregulatory processes but also in pathophysiological inflammatory responses. In the present study, we developed a model for active IL-1beta secretion. 5. Stroke rehabilitation: A randomized controlled study in the home setting; Functioning and costs
Sammanfattning : Aim: The purpose of the thesis was to describe and evaluate different aspects of rehabilitation after discharge for persons of working age after stroke. Aims were to compare an approach of support, information and training in the home setting with ordinary outpatient rehabilitation at the clinic and to describe the costs and factors influencing the costs.
