1. Birds and Borrelia
Sammanfattning : The Lyme disease causing spirochaete Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato is transmitted by ticks within the genus Ixodes. These ticks are liberal host seekers and parasitise mammals, birds and reptiles.Prior to this study, the distribution of I. ricinus ticks and Lyme disease was thought to be restricted to the southern half of Sweden. 2. Comparative Genomics in Birds
Sammanfattning : To shed light on forces that shape the molecular evolution of bird genomes, and in turn avian adaptations, comparative analyses of avian DNA sequences are important. Moreover, contrasting findings in birds to those of other organisms will lend a clearer view on general aspects of molecular evolution. LÄS MER
3. Reproduction and survival in the lesser spotted woodpecker. Effects of life history, mating system and age
Sammanfattning : Over 9 years, 116 breeding attempts made by individually marked lesser spotted woodpeckers (Dendrocopos minor) were followed in a study area in southern Sweden. The home-range area decreased from on average 742 ha in winter to a defended territory of 103 ha prior to breeding and 43 ha during nesting. LÄS MER
4. Attacking predators and fleeing prey : detection, escape and targeting behaviour in birds
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis is to further our understanding of predator and prey behaviour and decision making in different attack situations. The thesis deals with escape strategies, predator detection ability and prey targeting behaviour. LÄS MER
5. Birds as a Model for Comparative Genomic Studies
Sammanfattning : Comparative genomics provides a tool to investigate large biological datasets, i.e. genomic datasets. In my thesis I focused on inferring patterns of selection in coding and non-coding regions of avian genomes. LÄS MER
