1. Responsible Conduct in Dual Use Research : Towards an Ethic of Deliberation in the Life Sciences
Sammanfattning : Life scientists have increasingly been asked to incorporate a dual use responsibility in their research conduct. In this thesis, different aspects of what constitutes a reasonable responsibility in terms of avoiding harmful misuse of research for biological weapon purposes have been explored. LÄS MER
2. Infection through the farm gate : studies on movements of livestock and on-farm biosecurity
Sammanfattning : This thesis is based on studies of movements of livestock, on-farm biosecurity and disease awareness among farmers in Sweden; factors which can affect the spread of contagious livestock diseases. The structure of the cattle and pig movements were analysed using data obtained from the Swedish Board of Agriculture. LÄS MER
3. Gastrointestinal parasites in pigs : prevalence, risk factors and control
Sammanfattning : Gastrointestinal parasites are common in pigs worldwide, and in all production types. Clinical disease is rare and mainly associated with heavy nematode infections, or piglets infected with the coccidia Cystoisospora suis. Subclinical infections are more common and may result in reduced growth and poor feed utilisation. LÄS MER
4. Bovine coronavirus and bovine respiratory syncytial virus infections in dairy herds prospects for control : prospects for control
Sammanfattning : Bovine coronavirus (BCV) and bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) are significant causes of enteric and respiratory disease in cattle throughout the world. The aim of this thesis was to gain further knowledge of the epidemiology of these infections in Swedish dairy herds. 5. From data to decision - learning by probabilistic risk analysis of biological invasions
Sammanfattning : Predicting an uncertain future with uncertain knowledge is a challenge. The success of efforts to preserve biodiversity, to maintain biosecurity and to reduce a negative impact from climate change, depend on scientifically based predictions of future events. LÄS MER
