1. Accurate description of heterogeneous tumors for biologically optimized radiation therapy
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, a model of tissue oxygenation is presented, that takes into account the heterogeneous nature of tumor vasculature. Even though the model is rather simple, the resulting oxygen distributions agree very well with clinically observed oxygen distributions for most tumors and healthy normal tissues. LÄS MER
2. Methods for image-based dosimetry and radiobiological modelling in radionuclide therapy
Sammanfattning : In radionuclide therapy (RNT), radioactive pharmaceuticals are administered for therapeutic purposes. Dosimetry, i.e. the estimation of the absorbed dose to various targets, can potentially lead to a better understanding of the therapeutic effects in RNT and allow for individualization of the therapy. 3. Application of chemical oxidation processes for the removal of pharmaceuticals in biologically treated wastewater
Sammanfattning : The discharge of effluents from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is considered to be the major source of residual pharmaceuticals frequently found in aquatic environments. The complex nature of such compounds tends to make conventional biological treatments aimed at their removal ineffective. LÄS MER
4. Production of high quality 11C beams for radiation treatment and accurate PET-CT dose delivery verification
Sammanfattning : Radiation therapy with external beams of positron emitter light ions offers the optimal solution for simultaneously treating and in vivo monitoring the delivery of the dose in 3D with Positron Emission Tomography (PET) or PET-Computed Tomography (CT) imaging. Specifically, positron emitter light ion beams merge the main distinctive advantages of light ion therapy, namely a high conformal and biological effective dose delivery to the tumor, an optimal penumbra, and sparing of the surrounding normal tissues, with the advantage of a high β+-activity signal mainly produced directly by the beam itself, and therefore not primarily dependent on the specific stoichiometry of the body tissues. 5. Development of improved radiation therapy techniques using narrow scanned photon beams
Sammanfattning : The present thesis is focused on the development and application of narrow scanned high energy photon beam for radiation therapy. The introduction of physically and biologically optimized intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) requires a flexible and accurate dose delivery method to maximize the treatment outcome. LÄS MER
