    Nyckelord :NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURAL SCIENCES; RNA-seq; tagRNA-seq; primary and processed RNA; Enterococcus faecalis; Complex transcription; Metagenomics; 5 tagRACE; minimal absent words; compressed sensing; metagenomics; bacterial community reconstruction; Biological Physics; Biologisk fysik;

    Sammanfattning : Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) is a new technology that has revolutionized the way we study living organisms. Where previously only a few genes could be studied at a time through targeted direct probing, NGS offers the possibility to perform measurements for a whole genome at once. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Computational modeling of biological barriers

    Författare :Christian Wennberg; Erik Lindahl; Thomas Cheatham; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Molecular dynamics; cholesterol; lipid bilayer; permeability; long-range interactions; Lennard-Jones; dispersion; particle-mesh Ewald; stratum corneum; skin formation; Biological Physics; Biologisk fysik;

    Sammanfattning : One of the most important aspects for all life on this planet is the act to keep their biological processes in a state where they do not reach equilibrium. One part in the upholding of this imbalanced state is the barrier between the cells and their surroundings, created by the cell membrane. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Statistical Physics of Protein Folding and Aggregation

    Författare :Giorgio Favrin; Beräkningsbiologi och biologisk fysik; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Two State; Physics; Fysik; Statistics; operations research; programming; aktuariematematik; programmering; operationsanalys; actuarial mathematics; Statistik; Simulations; Aggregation; Protein Folding; Fysicumarkivet A:2004:Favrin;

    Sammanfattning : The mechanisms of protein folding and aggregation are investigated by computer simulations of all-atom and reduced models with sequence-based potentials. A quasi local Monte Carlo update is developed in order to efficiently sample proteins in the folded phase. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Variational Methods in Combinatorial Optimization and Phylogeny Reconstruction

    Författare :Henrik Jönsson; Beräkningsbiologi och biologisk fysik; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; statistical physics; gravitation; relativity; annealing; variational; mean-field; phylogeny; constraint satisfaction; combinatorial optimization; maximum likelihood; Physics; Fysik; Mathematical and general theoretical physics; quantum mechanics; classical mechanics; klassisk mekanik; kvantmekanik; relativitet; statistisk fysik; termodynamik; Fysicumarkivet A:2001:Jönsson; Matematisk och allmän teoretisk fysik; thermodynamics;

    Sammanfattning : Algorithms based on the variational approach, as used in statistical physics, are developed. For constraint satisfaction problems a novel cost function, based on information-theoretic arguments, is introduced, and an algorithm similar to the mean-field annealing algorithm is proposed. 5. 5. KNOW YOUR ENEMY : Characterizing Pathogenic Biomaterials Using Laser Tweezers

    Författare :Tobias Dahlberg; Magnus Andersson; Krister Wiklund; Mikael Sjödahl; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURAL SCIENCES; Optical Tweezers; Laser Tweezers; Raman Spectroscopy; Bacterial Adhesion; Biophysics; Pili; Bacterial Spores; Endospores; Oocysts; Cryptosporidium; Optics; biology; biologi; fysik; Physics;

    Sammanfattning : Diseases caused by pathogenic agents such as bacteria and viruses result in devastating costs on personal and societal levels. However, it is not just the emergence of new diseases that is problematic. Antibiotic resistance among bacteria makes uncomplicated infections difficult and lethal. LÄS MER
