  1. 1. Two Optimization Problems in Genetics : Multi-dimensional QTL Analysis and Haplotype Inference

    Författare :Carl Nettelblad; Sverker Holmgren; José M. Álvarez-Castro; Jukka Corander; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; quantitative trait loci; genome-wide association studies; hidden Markov models; numerical optimization; linkage analysis; haplotype inference; genotype imputation; high performance computing;

    Sammanfattning : The existence of new technologies, implemented in efficient platforms and workflows has made massive genotyping available to all fields of biology and medicine. Genetic analyses are no longer dominated by experimental work in laboratories, but rather the interpretation of the resulting data. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Wastewater treatment and biomass generation by Nordic microalgae : growth in subarctic climate and microbial interactions

    Författare :Lorenza Ferro; Christiane Funk; Francesco Gentili; Luísa Gouveia; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Microalgae; Wastewater; Nitrogen; Phosphate; Biomass; Lipids; Subarctic Climate; Light; Temperature; Bacteria; Photoautotrophy; Heterotrophy; Mixotrophy; HRAP; Metabarcoding; Microbial Communities; Alpha-diversity; Environmental Factors; Biochemistry; biokemi; mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Sammanfattning : Nordic native microalgal strains were isolated, genetically classified and tested for their ability to grow in municipal wastewater. Eight of the isolated strains could efficiently remove nitrogen and phosphate in less than two weeks. Two of these strains, Coelastrella sp. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Biological Laboratory X-Ray Microscopy

    Författare :Mikael Kördel; Hans Hertz; Ulrich Vogt; Jonas A. Sellberg; Rajmund Mokso; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; x-ray microscopy; laboratory x-ray microscopy; water window; biological; cell imaging; virus; Biological and Biomedical Physics; Biologisk och biomedicinsk fysik; Optik och fotonik; Optics and Photonics;

    Sammanfattning : Soft x-ray microscopy in the water window (? ≈ 2.3 − 4.3 nm) is a powerful technique for high-resolution biological imaging. The strong natural contrast between carbon-based structures and water allows visualization of hydrated and unstained samples, while providing enough transmission through up to ∼ 10 μm of organic matter. 4. 4. Network analysis and optimization of animal transports

    Författare :Nina Håkansson; Uno Wennergren; Annie Jonsson; Vittoria Colizza; Högskolan i Skövde; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Naturvetenskap; Natural sciences;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis is about animal transports and their effect on animal welfare. Transports are needed in today’s system of livestock farming. Long transports are stressful for animals and infectious diseases can spread via animal transports. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Variational Methods in Combinatorial Optimization and Phylogeny Reconstruction

    Författare :Henrik Jönsson; Beräkningsbiologi och biologisk fysik - Genomgår omorganisation; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; statistical physics; gravitation; relativity; annealing; variational; mean-field; phylogeny; constraint satisfaction; combinatorial optimization; maximum likelihood; Physics; Fysik; Mathematical and general theoretical physics; quantum mechanics; classical mechanics; klassisk mekanik; kvantmekanik; relativitet; statistisk fysik; termodynamik; Fysicumarkivet A:2001:Jönsson; Matematisk och allmän teoretisk fysik; thermodynamics;

    Sammanfattning : Algorithms based on the variational approach, as used in statistical physics, are developed. For constraint satisfaction problems a novel cost function, based on information-theoretic arguments, is introduced, and an algorithm similar to the mean-field annealing algorithm is proposed. LÄS MER
