11. An exploration of freshwater microbial ecology : from streamlined genera to global networks
Sammanfattning : Microbes are the main drivers of biogeochemical cycles on Earth and even though freshwaters cover only a small area of terrestrial surfaces their contribution to global cycles is important. Global cycles are measured by exchanges between systems e.g. water to atmosphere or lithosphere and are mediated by microbial communities. LÄS MER
12. Artificial neural networks in models of specialization and sympatric speciation
Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with specialization and how it is linked to sympatric speciation. The trait driving specialization is a cue recognition trait modelled with artificial neural networks that exploiters use to discriminate beneficial resources from detrimental resources based on the signals of the resources. 13. Inference of functional association networks and gene orthology
Sammanfattning : Most proteomics and genomics experiments are performed on a small set of well-studied model organisms and their results are generalized to other species. This is possible because all species are evolutionarily related. When transferring information across species, orthologs are the most likely candidates for functional equivalence. LÄS MER
14. Structure and Stability of Ecological Networks : The role of dynamic dimensionality and species variability in resource use
Sammanfattning : The main focus of this thesis is on the response of ecological communities to environmental variability and species loss. My approach is theoretical; I use mathematical models of networks where species population dynamics are described by ordinary differential equations. LÄS MER
15. Get in tune : chloroplast and nucleus harmony
Sammanfattning : Photosynthetic eukaryots emerged as a result of several billion years of evolution between proeukaryotic cell and ancestral cyanobacteria that formed modern chloroplasts. The symbiotic relationship led to significant rearrangements in the genomes of the plastid and the nucleus: as many as 90 % of all the plastid genes were transferred to the nucleus. LÄS MER
