16. The Effects of Temperature on Gut Blood Flow and Gut Motility in Fish
Sammanfattning : In order for a fish to grow and thrive, the gut must function efficiently. This is achieved through a range of processes, including controlled patterns of gut motility and modifications in gut blood flow. How these processes are affected by long and short-term changes in ambient temperature was the main focus of this thesis. LÄS MER
17. Domestication Effects on the Stress Response in Chickens : Genetics, Physiology, and Behaviour
Sammanfattning : Animal domestication, the process where animals become adapted to living in proximity to humans, is associated with the alteration of multiple traits, including decreased fearfulness and stress response. With an estimated population of 50 billion, the domesticated chicken is the most populous avian species in the world. LÄS MER
18. Pathogen-mediated selection in the immune system of rodents : Exploring selection targets, functional effects and trade-offs
Sammanfattning : Pathogens cause disease and play an important role in shaping evolution of the host immune system. They create pressure on host immunity to evolve in numerous ways, most commonly by increasing divergence between species (positive selection) or increasing polymorphisms within a population (balancing selection). 19. Fishy behavior : persistent effects of early-life exposure to 17α-ethinylestradiol
Sammanfattning : The synthetic estrogen 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2) is an endocrine disrupting chemical (EDC) of concern due to its persistent nature and widespread presence in the aquatic environment. In mammals, effects of developmental EDC exposure on reproduction and behavior not only persist to adulthood after discontinued exposure, but are also inherited by several consecutive unexposed generations. 20. The Genus Amomum (Zingiberaceae) in Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam : Taxonomy and Ethnobotany, with Special Emphasis on Women's Health
Sammanfattning : The species of Amomum Roxb. (Zingiberaceae) in Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam are revised. Thirty-five species and two varieties are recognised, all names are typified, and detailed descriptions and a key are provided. Nine new species are described and one species is validated. LÄS MER
