2. High Octane Number Fuels in Advanced Combustion Modes for Sustainable Transportation
Sammanfattning : The research community recently proposed a low-temperature combustion (LTC) concept that can simultaneously reduce Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) and soot emissions while maintaining high engine efficiency. Given that diesel fuel is prone to preignition with early injection, gasoline-like fuel with high octane number is utilised to provide sufficient ignition delay and extend the load range. LÄS MER
3. Characterisation of Urban Rainfall in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Sammanfattning : Rainfall characteristics of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, are studied in space and time; on a large scale, 550 km2, and long term scale to find out the monsoon influence, and on urban basin scale, 23 km2, to determine dynamic properties of rainfalls and spatial correlations, and on a point scale to determine the probabilities of very high rain intensities. The importance of spatial and temporal variability of rainfall was investigated applying cross correlation on long term historical rainfalls from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. LÄS MER
4. Ecological interactions in human modified landscapes : Landscape dependent remedies for the maintenance of biodiversity and ecosystem services
Sammanfattning : Modern agricultural practices have led to an intensification of the agricultural landscape which has negatively affected both biodiversity and the ecosystem services it provides. In my thesis I have used ecological theory of optimal foraging to try and explain how landscape structure, landscape composition and agricultural management can explain the loss of biodiversity and how remedies can efficiently be implemented. 5. Bee foraging and pollination : Consequences of spatial and temporal variation in flower resources
Sammanfattning : Wild bees foraging in contemporary agricultural landscapes are, because of agricultural intensification, faced with the challenges of reduced flower-rich habitats, as well as a changed spatio-temporal distribution of flower resources. As a result of this and other stressors such as pesticide exposure, widespread declines of bees have been reported. LÄS MER
