1. Protected Lignin Biorefining: Fundamental Insights on Lignin Reactivity
Sammanfattning : The potential to utilize lignin, which constitutes as much as 15-30% of the biomass, needs further evaluation. In the transition towards a bioeconomy, lignin has the potential to replace fossil-based phenols. Attempts to valorize the available technical lignins are ongoing; however, that lignin suffers from molecular heterogeneity. LÄS MER
2. Biocomposites Based on Core-Shell Cellulose Nanofibers : Preparation, Structure, and Properties
Sammanfattning : Cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) are of interest as load-bearing components for polymer matrix nanocomposites. A wide range of nanostructured materials including nanopaper/films, foams, aerogels, and hydrogels can be prepared from CNFs. The material performance can be fine-tuned when CNFs are combined with different polymer matrices. LÄS MER
3. Electrophysiology and optical coherence tomography in acquired and hereditary retinal disorders
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, retinal function in general, as well as central retinal function and structure are described in selected forms of acquired and hereditary retinal disorders, in order to improve our understanding of underlying pathogenic mechanisms. This comparison has been made possible during the last years, through the relatively recent development of multifocal ERG (mfERG) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) for the analysis of central retinal function and structure, respectively. 4. Molecular dissection of the Goodpasture epitope
Sammanfattning : Goodpasture disease is a prototype autoimmune disease that is characterized by a rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis, with or without lung haemorrhage, associated with autoantibodies against the glomerular basement membrane. The major antigen has previously been shown to be the non-collagenous domain of the a3 chain of type IV collagen, one of the six known a chains of type IV collagen. LÄS MER
5. Deformation and Fracture Behavior of Transparent Wood-Polymer Biocomposites
Sammanfattning : Transparent wood-polymer biocomposites (TWPBs) are interesting wood-based materials with a unique combination of optical transmittance and mechanical properties. The wood substrate is delignified (removal of lignin) while the wood microstructure is preserved. LÄS MER
