1. The importance of immunological, genetic and clinical factors for beta cell function in childhood diabetes
Sammanfattning : Type I diabetes is caused by environmentally initiated, progressive autoimmune destruction of pancreatic beta cells in genetically susceptible individuals, which results in insulin deficiency and hyperglycemia. At diagnosis, about 10-20 % of beta cells remain, but after insulin therapy is started, a period with regained secretive capacity follows. LÄS MER
2. Effects of over-stimulation by glucose on pancreatic beta-cell functioning : studies in vitro with diazoxide
Sammanfattning : Long term hyperglycemia impairs pancreatic ß-cell function. In vivo studies in rats have shown a decreased glucose-induced insulin response in the perfused pancreas after high glucose infusions. LÄS MER
3. Endocrine aspects of obesity and weight reduction by bariatric surgery : with special emphasis on beta cell function
Sammanfattning : Severe obesity is the most predictive acquired risk factor for the development of type 2 diabetes. Bariatric surgery induces marked weight loss and reverses the diabetic state significantly. LÄS MER
4. Aspects on the modulation of potassium channels in insulin-producing beta-cells
Sammanfattning : This thesis attempts to further clarify mechanisms behind the negative effects of overstimulation and the beneficial effect of β-cell rest. For this purpose diazoxide - opener of K+-ATP channels, which reversibly inhibits glucose-induced insulin secretion, was used as a probe. LÄS MER
5. Physicochemical properties of root fiber suspensions. A comparison between parsnip (Pastinaca sativa) and yacon (Smallanthus sonchifolius)
Sammanfattning : The physicochemical properties of two root suspensions, parsnip (Pastinaca sativa) and yacon (Smallanthus sonchifolius), were studied and compared at different concentrations and after being subjected to processes such as homogenization and heating. The study and the evaluation of the physicochemical properties of these plant materials in the form of pastes might help to increase the interest in these two roots, and possibly encourage their further industrial use.
