1. The role of young-of-the-year fish in lake ecosystems
Sammanfattning : Food chain theory is based on consumption; that is, presupposing that the only important interaction between organisms is that they actually meet in an unstructured environment and that one of them is consumed. Recently, studies, including biomanipulation projects, have indicated that trophic interactions are more complex than predicted by food chain theory. LÄS MER
2. Simplicity within Complexity : Understanding dynamics of cellular networks by model reduction
Sammanfattning : Cellular networks composed of interactions between genes, proteins and metabolites, determines the behavioural repertoire of the cell. Recent developments in high-throughput experimental techniques and computational methods allow static descriptions of these networks on a genome scale. LÄS MER
3. Living in a predation matrix : Studies on fish and their prey in a Baltic Sea coastal area
Sammanfattning : This thesis was written within the framework of a biomanipulation project where young-of-the-year (YOY) pikeperch (Sander lucioperca) were stocked to a Baltic Sea bay to improve water quality through a top-down trophic cascade. The aim of my doctorial studies was however focused on a broader ecological question, namely predation (the main driving force in a biomanipulation). LÄS MER
4. Conservation, personality and ecology of the European mink (Mustela lutreola)
Sammanfattning : Loss of biodiversity is a growing problem and hence conservation of species is becoming increasingly important. In this dissertation conservation issues related to the critically endangered European mink (Mustela lutreola) are examined in situ (in the wild) and ex situ (in captivity) on both an individual and community level. 5. Studies on antidepressant-mediated regulation of signal transduction
Sammanfattning : Depression affects around 16% of the population at some point in their lives and major depressive disorder is a leading cause of disability worldwide. Depression is caused by an interaction of genetic and environmental factors, but the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying its pathogenesis are not entirely clear. LÄS MER
