1. BDNF, impulsiveness and avoidant focused coping in suicide attempters
Sammanfattning : Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is an important protein for neuroplasticity and neurogenesis. In this thesis the role of BDNF, in suicidal behaviour was investigated with focus on possible risk factors for suicidal behaviour such as avoidant focused coping, dysfuntional personality traits like impulsiveness and hyperactivity of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis. 2. Functional Recovery after Experimental Stroke in Mice- Involvement of Enriched Environment, BDNF and Cell Genesis
Sammanfattning : Stroke is caused by an obstruction of blood flow to a part of the brain, resulting in brain damage. Stroke is the third most common cause of death in the industrialized world, and the primary cause of adult-onset disability. LÄS MER
3. Genes to remember : imaging genetics of hippocampus-based memory functions
Sammanfattning : In the field of imaging genetics, brain function and structure are used as intermediate phenotypes between genes and cognition/diseases to validate and extend findings from behavioral genetics. In this thesis, three of the strongest candidate genes for episodic memory, KIBRA, BDNF, and APOE, were examined in relation to memory performance and hippocampal/parahippocampal fMRI blood-oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) signal. 4. Olfactory Function : The Influence of Demographic, Cognitive, and Genetic Factors
Sammanfattning : Olfactory function is affected by demographic, cognitive, and genetic factors. In the present thesis, three empirical studies investigated individual differences in olfactory ability. Study I explored demographic and cognitive correlates in common olfactory tasks; odor detection, odor discrimination, and odor identification. LÄS MER
5. PACAP and orphanin FQ/nociceptin -Distribution, importance and regulation in sensory neurons and spinal cord
Sammanfattning : Neuropeptide expression in the nervous system is abundant and plastic, and an altered expression after injury is an example of a functional response, helping the neuron to cope with adverse changes, and involves effects on differentiation, synthesis, repair/regeneration, survival, and modulation of signal transmission. I have investigated the distribution/expression of the neuropeptides, orphanin FQ/nociceptin (OFQ/N) and pituitary adenylate cyclase activating polypeptide (PACAP), under normal conditions, in response to nerve injuries, and also studied sensory responses in mice deficient for the PAC1 receptor (PAC1-/-).
