  1. 6. Effects of antipsychotics on GABA neurons in the basal ganglia of the rat

    Författare :Jiang Yu; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurosciences; antipsychotics; γ-aminobutyric acid; glutamic acid decarboxylase; basal ganglia; entopeduncular nucleus; vacuous chewing movements; Neurovetenskap; Neurology; Neurologi; Psychiatry; psykiatri;

    Sammanfattning : Antipsychotics are used in the treatment of psychosis and, based on their propensities to induce extrapyramidal side effects (EPS), are divided into typical (haloperidol) and atypical (clozapine) subtypes. The incidence of EPS, arises from an imbalance in the neurotransmission between two majorGABAergic pathways of the basal ganglia that connect the striatum directly to the entopeduncular nucleus (EP) and the substantia nigra reticulata or indirectly via the globus pallidus and the subthalamic nucleus. 2. 7. Anatomical, neurochemical and behavioural consequences of immunotoxin lesions of the basal forebrain cholinergic system

    Författare :Giampiero Leanza; Neurobiologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neural transplantation; reinnervation; axon growth; functional sparing; memory; learning; cortex; hippocampus; immunolesion; acetylcholine; basal forebrain; rat; Neurology; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi; Physiology; Fysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : The cholinergic hypothesis of geriatric memory dysfunction suggests that the learning and memory deficits representing the cardinal symptoms of dementia in the aged and in patients suffering from Alzheimer's disease may be attributable to a decline in the function of the cholinergic projection systems of the basal forebrain. Although many studies have addressed the issue of a causal relationship between cholinergic hypofunction and cognitive disturbance, analyses of the functional role of the basal forebrain cholinergic neuronal systems in the brain have so far been hampered by the lack of an efficient and specific cholinergic neurotoxin. 3. 8. Basal boundary conditions, stability and verification in glaciological numerical models

    Författare :Christian Helanow; Peter Jansson; Brian Hanson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Glaciology; subglacial hydrology; ice sheet modeling; basal boundary conditions; non-linear Stokes flow; Physical Geography; naturgeografi;

    Sammanfattning : To increase our understanding of how ice sheets and glaciers interact with the climate system, numerical models have become an indispensable tool. However, the complexity of these systems and the natural limitation in computational power is reflected in the simplifications of the represented processes and the spatial and temporal resolution of the models. 4. 9. The proprioception and neuromuscular stability of the basal thumb joint

    Författare :Nathalie Mobargha; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :basal thumb joint;

    Sammanfattning : OBJECTIVES: The basal thumb joint, or the first carpometacarpal joint (CMC1) is an enigmatic construction. The concavo-convex shape of the CMC1 and wide range of movement, allows for both precision and power grips and is particularly susceptible to the development of osteoarthritis. LÄS MER

  5. 10. Computational Dissection of the Basal Ganglia : functions and dynamics in health and disease

    Författare :Mikael Lindahl; Jeanette Hällgren Kotaleski; Mark Humphries; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Computer Science; Datalogi;

    Sammanfattning : The basal ganglia (BG), a group of nuclei in the forebrain of all vertebrates, are important for behavioral selection. BG receive contextual input from most cortical areas as well as from parts of the thalamus, and provide output to brain systems that are involved in the generation of behavior, i.e. the thalamus and the brain stem.
