11. Asymptomatic Bacteriuria. Protection against, and differential diagnosis towards symptomatic Urinary Tract Infection
Sammanfattning : Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most common infectious diseases in humans, with a subset of sus- ceptible individuals who experience recurrent episodes. e increase in antibiotic resistance in gram-negative uropathogens, due to antibiotic overuse, is a strong rationale for developing therapeutic alternatives and to improve diagnostics. 12. Studies on patients with ileal conduit diversion with special regard to renal infection
Sammanfattning : The conditions for retrograde transport of urine and thereby bacteria in the urinary svstem of diverted patients (device and urinary tract) were studied with roentgenological technigue. Back-flow from the urinary collecting device into the conduit occurred in a fifth of those patients who had a flat stoma. LÄS MER
13. Luminol chemiluminescence and some analytical applications in biochemistry and microbiology
Sammanfattning : The chemiluminescent luminol reaction was studied in the presence of hematin compounds and perborate. It was found that the maximum rate of light emission of chemiluminescence was proportional to initial concentrations of all participating reactants and that perborate promoted destruction of the hematin compounds concomitant with the decline of the rate of chemiluminescence. 14. Aerococcal infections - from bedside to bench and back
Sammanfattning : The genus Aerococcus comprises eight species of Gram-positive cocci. The incidence and the clinical importance of aerococcal infections have been underestimated in the past, due to species identification difficulties. LÄS MER
15. Extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing enterobacteriaceae : epidemiology and dynamics of fecal carriage
Sammanfattning : ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae (EPE) has become a major cause of community acquired urinary tract infection (UTI), and fecal carriage of EPE is emerging worldwide. The aims of this thesis were to study the molecular epidemiology of ESBL-enzymes in Stockholm (I) to evaluate treatment alternatives to the carbapenems for EPE (I-III), and to study the duration of fecal carriage and identify factors associated with prolonged carriage (IV).
