21. Growth factor regulation of the urokinase plasminogen activator (uPA) system in human endometrium, and the significance of uPA receptor activation in endometrial angiogenesis
Sammanfattning : The purpose of this thesis was to examine the role of growth factors and the urokinase plasminogen activator (uPA) system in human endometrial angiogenesis. Growth factors as well as progesterone increased expression of the main inhibitor of uPA (PAI-1) in primary cultures of endometrial stromal cells. LÄS MER
22. Stem cell transplantation in multiple myeloma : clinical aspects and experimental gene transfer studies
Sammanfattning : Multiple myeloma (MM) is a hematological malignant disease considered essentially incurable despite its sensitivity to cytotoxic chemotherapeutic drugs and radiation. High-dose chemo/radiotherapy with allogeneic- or autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (tx) can induce a disease-free state and may prolong survival and offer an improved quality of life to MM patients. 23. Studies on pain-related messengers and receptors in dorsal root ganglia and spinal cord
Sammanfattning : Pain is the most common reason why people seek medical advice. A large group of patients suffering from so-called neuropathic pain, due to injury to the nervous system itself, is often not helped by the currently available therapies. Classical analgesic drugs, such as opioids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, may have severe side effects. LÄS MER
24. Matrix metalloproteases and cell motility in malignant mesothelioma
Sammanfattning : Invasion and metastasis of malignant tumor cells requires destruction of and migration through extracellular matrix (ECM) such as basement membrane and interstitial stroma. The ECM-degrading proteases produced by tumor cells and stromal cells and cell motility play a crucial role in this process. LÄS MER
25. Platelet Activation and Inhibition in Connection with Vascular Stents
Sammanfattning : This thesis describes the Chandler loop, which makes it possible to conduct studies in vitro of molecular and cellular interactions between whole blood and stents. It was possible to monitor activation and inhibition of the cascades systems, leukocytes and platelets by combining different platelet inhibitors and heparin coating of stents. LÄS MER
