1. Troubled childhoods cast long shadows : Studies of childhood adversity and premature mortality in a Swedish post-war birth cohort
Sammanfattning : Taking a life course approach can help us to understand health inequalities. This thesis illustrates that socially-patterned childhood experiences might play a critical role for inequalities in mortality. The association between childhood adversity and premature mortality is investigated in the context of a 1953 Stockholm birth cohort. LÄS MER
2. The Beauty in Broken Symmetries : b-jet identification and searches for Supersymmetry, Dark Matter and multi-Higgs boson production with the ATLAS experiment
Sammanfattning : The Large Hadron Collider is the largest and most powerful accelerator in the world. Proton bunches are accelerated to 6.5 TeV inside the LHC ring in opposite directions and are then collided at four different points around the ring with an energy of 13 TeV. LÄS MER
3. Older drivers with cognitive impairments : issues of detection and assessment
Sammanfattning : Older drivers are often presented as a traffic safety problem. Age-related medical conditions such as dementias and stroke impair cognitive functions that are crucial for safe driving. Uncertainty remains regarding the most appropriate clinical methods to assess driving fitness in these patient groups. LÄS MER
4. Transcriptional gene signatures : passing the restriction point for routine clinical implementation
Sammanfattning : Uncontrolled cell growth and cell division are central to the process of tumorigenesis and a number of gene expression signatures have been developed based on genes that are involved in the cell cycle. Notably, gene expression signatures are used extensively in breast cancer research to examine the disease at a molecular level to describe tumour progression, treatment response and patients’ survival. 5. Studies of some Operators of Harmonic Analysis in certain Function Spaces with Applications to PDEs
Sammanfattning : The study in this PhD thesis aims at development of certain mathematical methods used in applications, in particular, in the study of regularity properties of solutions in various mathematical models described by Partial Differential Equations (PDEs). To this end, we study various operators of harmonic analysis in certain function spaces, since solutions to many PDEs may be expressed in terms of such operators. LÄS MER
