1. New approaches to monitoring of cardiac function
Sammanfattning : Left ventricular pumping performance may be described by intraventricular pressure and volume variables, usually presented as a pressure-volume plot. However, on-line monitoring of left ventricular pressure and volume with high temporal resolution requires the use of an invasive catheter technique such as, for example, the conductance catheter method. 2. Methodological aspects of toe blood pressure measurements for evaluation of arterial insuffiency in patients with diabetes
Sammanfattning : Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a growing health problem in the aging population of the western world with prevalence figures around 6-7%, which are increasing fast. Treatment of this disease is complex and expensive for society. One of the most feared DM complications is foot ulcerations. LÄS MER
3. Interferometric measurements and analysis with applications in elastohydrodynamic experiments
Sammanfattning : Section A in this thesis is dedicated to measurements of lubricant films separating rotating surfaces in elastohydrodynamic experiments. Two specially designed interferometry-based methods are presented. A method to compensate for measurement errors due to the pressure dependence of the refractive index of the lubricant is proposed. 4. Automatic Analysis and Reduction of Reaction Mechanisms for Complex Fuel Combustion
Sammanfattning : This work concentrates on automatic procedures for simplifying chemical models for realistic fuels using skeletal mechanism construction and Quasi Steady-State Approximation (QSSA) applied to detailed reaction mechanisms. To automate the selection of species for removal or approximation, different indices for species ranking have thus been proposed. LÄS MER
5. On leg ischaemia : aspects of epidemiology and diagnostics
Sammanfattning : The first part of this thesis consists of a population-based epidemiological study on symptomatic leg arterial disease in a Swedish community, based on a postal questionnaire and systolic ankle pressure measurements, with calculation of the ankle-brachial pressure index (ABPI; usually ≥ 1.0 in healthy subjects).
