  1. 1. Framing the Gaze : (Audio-) Visual Design Intentions and Perceptual Considerations in Film Editing

    Författare :Thorbjörn Swenberg; Yvonne Eriksson; Árni Sverrisson; Pia Tikka; Högskolan Dalarna; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANITIES; HUMANIORA; HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; moving image editing; film production; TV production; audiovisual design; audiovisual perception; filmklippning; videoredigering; filmproduktion; TV-produktion; audiovisuell design; audiovisuell perception; Intercultural Studies; Interkulturella studier; Innovation and Design; innovation och design;

    Sammanfattning : The theme for this doctoral thesis focuses on how a film editor strives actively to perceptually frame and direct the film viewer’s gaze across film edits. The editor’s (audio-)visual intentions concerning the film viewing correspond to perceptual considerations that the editor makes during film editing. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Time is of the essence in speech perception! : Get it fast, or think about it

    Författare :Shahram Moradi; Jerker Rönnberg; Björn Lidestam; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Noise; auditory speech perception; audiovisual speech perception; hearing aids; Buller; hörsel; auditiv talperception; audiovisuell talperception; hörhjälpmedel;

    Sammanfattning : The present thesis examined the extent to which background noise influences the isolation point (IP, the shortest time from the onset of speech stimulus required for correct identification of that speech stimulus) and accuracy in identification of different types of speech stimuli (consonants, words, and final words in high-predictable [HP] and low-predictable [LP] sentences). These speech stimuli were presented in different modalities of presentation (auditory, visual, and audiovisual) to young normal-hearing listeners (Papers 1, 2, and 5). LÄS MER

  3. 3. Semantic Framing of Speech : Emotional and Topical Cues in Perception of Poorly Specified Speech

    Författare :Björn Lidestam; Björn Lyxell; Staffan Hygge; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SOCIAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; Speech perception; speechreading; facial expressions; priming; phonemes; semantics; lipreading; auditory perception; cognition; paralinguistics; emotional content; Läppavläsning; Psychology; Psykologi;

    Sammanfattning : The general aim of this thesis was to test the effects of paralinguistic (emotional) and prior contextual (topical) cues on perception of poorly specified visual, auditory, and audiovisual speech. The specific purposes were to (1) examine if facially displayed emotions can facilitate speechreading performance; (2) to study the mechanism for such facilitation; (3) to map information-processing factors that are involved in processing of poorly specified speech; and (4) to present a comprehensive conceptual framework for speech perception, with specification of the signal being considered. 4. 4. Source and Channel Coding for Audiovisual Communication Systems

    Författare :Moo Young Kim; Bastiaan Kleijn; Richard Heusdens; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Telekommunikation; Information theory; high-rate theory; source coding; channel coding; quantization; Telekommunikation; Telecommunication; Telekommunikation;

    Sammanfattning : Topics in source and channel coding for audiovisual communication systems are studied. The goal of source coding is to represent a source with the lowest possible rate to achieve a particular distortion, or with the lowest possible distortion at a given rate. Channel coding adds redundancy to quantized source information to recover channel errors. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Understanding virtual speakers

    Författare :Jens Nirme; The Educational Technology Group; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Verbal Comprehension; Multimodality; Audiovisual integration; Gesture; Educational Technology;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis addresses how verbal comprehension is affected by seeing the speaker and in particular when the speaker is an animated virtual speaker. Two people visually co-present – one talking and the other listening, trying to comprehend what is said – is a central and critical scenario whether one is interested in human cognition, communication or learning.
