16. Satellite Limb-Scatter Observations of Stratospheric NO2 and O3 -Retrievals, Validation and Applications
Sammanfattning : Global observations of vertically resolved atmospheric constituents with high temporal and spatial sampling are crucial for various scientific assessments of ozone depletion and climate change. This thesis explains how such data can be retrieved from satellite limb-scatter observations. LÄS MER
17. Some aspects of the Atlantic ocean circulation
Sammanfattning : The present thesis deals with the ocean circulation from two viewpoints: Pro primo, the dependence of the global thermohaline ocean circulation (THC) on the parameterization of the small-scale vertical mixing processes in the interior of the ocean, and, pro secundo, the dynamics of the circulation in the Nordic Seas. The THC is found be crucially dependent on the parameterization of the small-scale vertical mixing, two types of which have been compared: The commonly used constant diffusivity and a, physically more plausible, stability-dependent parameterization. 18. Retrieval of ocean surface winds and currents using satellite synthetic aperture radar and infrared radiometry
Sammanfattning : This thesis focuses on the development, analysis and evaluation of methods for the retrieval of ocean surface winds with synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and surface currents with infrared (IR) radiometer sensors. The SAR wind speed retrievals are based on geophysical model functions using wind directions obtained with two approaches. LÄS MER
19. Mesoscale dynamics and boundary-layer structure in topographically forced low-level jets
Sammanfattning : Two types of mesoscale wind-speed jet and their effects on boundary-layer structure were studied. The first is a coastal jet off the northern California coast, and the second is a katabatic jet over Vatnajökull, Iceland. LÄS MER
20. Analysis of stratospheric ozone depletion in the Arctic using a data assimilation technique
Sammanfattning : Serious ozone depletion has been measured every Antarctic spring since the early 80’s. This ozone depletion is considered to be a result of photo chemical reactions and cat- alytic cycles resulting from anthropogenic halogen containing gases. LÄS MER
