1. Air pollution and health – Indicators, trends and impacts
Sammanfattning : This thesis focuses on some of the limitations and difficulties that exist when it comes to quantifying the human health effects that arise as a result of air pollution exposure. The following four issues are particularly analysed and discussed: 1) The measurement techniques used for carbonaceous particles and their lack of consistency; 2) Do the health risks associated with exposure to PM10 depend on the content of elemental carbon in the aerosol?; 3) Trends in air pollutants and the health effects that arise as a result of changed exposure to the measured pollutants; 4) The associations between the measured concentrations of different air pollutants in Stockholm and the daily number deaths; 5) Air quality indicators and health outcomes as basis for an air quality health index (AQHI). 2. Quantification of population exposure and health impacts associated with air pollution
Sammanfattning : There is substantial evidence that air pollution, in particular particulate matter (PM), affects our health. The overall objective of this thesis is to understand and quantify population exposure to ambient air pollution and related health impacts. LÄS MER
3. Regional studies of the optical, chemical and microphysical properties of atmospheric aerosols : Radiative impacts and cloud formation
Sammanfattning : Atmospheric particles are ubiquitous in the Earth’s atmosphere and have potential to influence atmospheric chemistry, visibility, global climate and human health, particularly downwind from major pollution sources. The main objective of this thesis was to investigate questions pertaining to the microphysical, chemical and optical properties of aerosol particles by using in situ data collected during four experiments carried out in different regions of the Northern Hemisphere. 4. Isotope-based source apportionment of black carbon aerosols in the Eurasian Arctic
Sammanfattning : Aerosols change the Earth's energy balance. Black carbon (BC) aerosols are a product of incomplete combustion of fossil fuels and biomass burning and cause a net warming through aerosol radiation interactions (ari) and aerosol cloud interactions (aci). LÄS MER
5. Source-Receptor Modeling of Air Pollution : Assessment of Source Contributions: Source Characterization and Chemometric Applications
Sammanfattning : Particles released to the atmosphere from anthropogenic sources affect the Earth’s climate as well as the health of the population. Anthropogenic sources of atmospheric particles are e.g. the combustion of biomass and fossil fuels, road, brake and tire wear and various industrial activities. LÄS MER
