  1. 1. Gradation-Based Framework for Asphalt Mixtures

    Författare :Bernardita Francisca Lira Miranda; Björn Birgisson; Terhi Pellinen; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Asphalt; aggregate gradation; packing theory; asphalt microstructure; porosity; film thickness; rutting; moisture damage.; SRA - Transport; SRA - Transport;

    Sammanfattning : Asphalt mixture microstructure is formed by aggregates, bitumen binder and air voids. Aggregates make for up to 90% of the mixtures volume and the structure formed by them will depend mostly on their size distribution and shape. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Towards frost damage prediction in asphaltic pavements

    Författare :Lisa Lövqvist; Nicole Kringos; Romain Balieu; Robert Karlsson; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; frost damage; winter damage; asphalt; pavements; micromechanical model; microstructure; freeze-thaw cycles; finite element model; Byggvetenskap; Civil and Architectural Engineering;

    Sammanfattning : Roads are subjected to mechanical loads from the traffic as well as deteriorating mechanisms originating from the surrounding environment and climate. The damage arising is particularly severe during the winter season, when for example raveling, pot holes and cracks can emerge on the surfaces of asphaltic roads. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Thermally Induced Fracture Performance of Asphalt Mixtures

    Författare :Prabir Kumar Das; Björn Birgisson; Dallas Little; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Low temperature cracking; asphalt concrete fracture mechanics; viscoelasticity; non-linear thermal contraction coefficient; atomic force microscopy; wax; wax crystallization; SRA - Transport; SRA - Transport;

    Sammanfattning : A major distress mode in asphalt pavements is low temperature cracking, which results from the contraction and expansion of the asphalt pavement under extreme temperature changes. The potential for low temperature cracking is an interplay between the environment, the road structure and importantly the properties of the asphalt mixture. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Development of Energy-based Damage and Plasticity Models for Asphalt Concrete Mixtures

    Författare :Ibrahim Onifade; Björn Birgisson; Linbing Wang; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; energy-based models; damage; X-ray computed tomography; continuum plasticity mechanics CPM; effective micro-crack stress; Transportvetenskap; Transport Science;

    Sammanfattning : Characterizing the full range of damage and plastic behaviour of asphalt mixtures under varying strain-rates and stress states is a complex and challenging task. One reason for this  is partly due to the strain rate and temperature dependent nature of the material as well as the variation in the properties of the constituent materials that make up the composite asphalt mixture.
