6. Formation and degradation of PCDD/F in waste incineration ashes
Sammanfattning : The disposal of combustible wastes by incineration is a controversial issue that is strongly debated by both scientists and environmental activists due to the resulting emissions of noxious compounds, including (inter alia) polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), dibenzofurans (PCDFs), heavy metals and acid gases like sulfur dioxide. Currently available air pollution control devices are capable of effectively cleaning flue gases, and PCDD/F emissions to air from modern municipal solid waste (MSW) incinerators are low. LÄS MER
7. Application of fuel design to mitigate ash-related problems during combustion of biomass
Sammanfattning : The energy supply of today is, through the use of fossil energy carriers, contributing to increased net emissions of greenhouse gases. This hasseveral negative effects on our environment and our climate. In order toreduce the impact of this, and possibly to reverse some of the effects, allrenewable energy sources must be used. 8. Unsaturated Phase Environmental Processes in MSWI Bottom Ash
Sammanfattning : Every year, Sweden produces 1.5 million tons of incineration residues from waste to energy plants. Among these residues bottom ash(BA) due to its large volume and good geotechnical quality can be reused as an alternative construction material. LÄS MER
9. Interactions between calcium and heavy metals in Norway spruce : Accumulation and binding of metals in wood and bark
Sammanfattning : Waste products from the forest industry are to be spread in forests in Sweden to counteract nutrient depletion due to whole tree harvesting. This may increase the bioavailability of calcium (Ca) and heavy metals, such as cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) in forest soils. LÄS MER
10. Alternative Adsorption Materials for Treatment of Contaminated Waters
Sammanfattning : The thesis presents a study of adsorbent materials for treatment of contaminated waters and remediation of contaminated soils. Natural and waste product materials showed high adsorption capacity for metals and organic pollutants and proved to be a good alternative to commercial adsorbents. LÄS MER
