1. The role of the adventitia and perivascular tissue for the formation of intimal hyperplasia
Sammanfattning : Symptomatic atherosclerosis is commonly treated with balloon angioplasty or bypass surgery. About 30% of the interventions will re-narrow within a year due to restenosis and graft-stenosis. Thickening of the luminal layer, the intima, is an important component in these side-effects. LÄS MER
2. Survival of onlay bone grafts. A study in the adult rat
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to study onlay bone grafting in the adult rat to improve graft incorporation and perservation of graft size. In 167 adult isogeneic lewis rats, the size maintenance and bone formation at the graft-host interface of uni- and bicortical onlays positioned in various environments and treatments were investigated. 3. The value of artificial disc replacement in cervical radiculopathy
Sammanfattning : Background; Artificial disc replacement (ADR) is a motion-preserving implant and a further development of existing surgical implants for the treatment of cervical radiculopathy. Theoretically, an artificial disc could decrease stress on adjacent segment and thereby prevent rapid progression of degenerative changes in surrounding segments. LÄS MER
4. Nerve gap repair by the use of artificial conduits and cultured cells
Sammanfattning : Peripheral nerve injuries are often associated with loss of nerve tissue and require autologous nerve grafts to provide a physical substrate for axonal growth. This thesis investigates the use of fibrin as both a tubular conduit to guide nerve regeneration and also as a matrix material to suspend various regenerative cell types within/on poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) nerve conduits. 5. Artificial blood vessels - Studies on endothelial cell and blood interactions with bacterial cellulose
Sammanfattning : Cardiovascular diseases are still the number one cause of death or invalidity in the western world today. Atherosclerotic plaques and restenosis can result in severe occlusions of peripheral and coronary arteries. Treatment depends on the severity of the disease and includes drug therapy and bypass surgery. LÄS MER
