    Sammanfattning : Do metal particles (including particles of pure metals, alloys, metal oxides and compounds) pose a hazard or risk to human health? In the light of this question, this thesis summarizes results from research conducted on metal particles, and describes the elaboration and implementation of an in vitro test methodology to study metal release from particles through corrosion and dissolution processes in synthetic biological media relevant for human exposure through inhalation/ingestion and dermal contact. Bioaccessible metals are defined as the pool of released metals from particles that potentially could be made available for absorption by humans or other organisms. LÄS MER

  2. 12. Bioaccessibility of Stainless Steels : Importance of Bulk and Surface Features

    Författare :Gunilla Herting; Inger Odnevall Wallinder; Stuart Lyon; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Stainless steel; iron; chromium; nickel; corrosion; metal release; artificial rain; synthetic body fluids; acetic acid; surface oxide; surface finish; Surface and colloid chemistry; Yt- och kolloidkemi;

    Sammanfattning : With increasing environmental awareness, the desire to protect human beings and the environment from adverse effects induced by dispersed metals has become an issue of great concern and interest. New policies, such as REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) within the European Community, have been implemented to reduce hazards posed by the use of chemicals on producers and downstream users. 3. 13. In Search of Scientific Methods for Conservation of Historic Silk Costumes

    Författare :Johanna Nilsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; silk; artificial ageing; Queen Christina; historic costumes; conservation; ATR-FTIR; SEC; DRIFTS; tensile tests;

    Sammanfattning : The general aim of this dissertation is to lay ground for the evaluation of conservation methods for historic costumes. The Royal Armoury, Stockholm has a large number of 17th century men’s garments, many of them made of silk and in need of conservation. LÄS MER

  4. 14. Human newborn behavior during exposure to maternal and other odors

    Författare :Heili Varendi; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Olfaction appears to play a pivotal role in immediate postnatal interactions between mammalian mothers and their offspring. The present study examined: (1) whether and how the newborn human infant and its mother communicate by means of olfaction; (2) the role of amniotic fluid (AF) and breast odors in such communication; (3) olfactory learning by neonates. 5. 15. Long-term performance of water repellants on rendered autoclaved aerated concrete

    Författare :Hülya Kus; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :water repellants; renderings; autoclaved aerated concrete; surface treatments; long-term performance; degradation; natural weathering; artificial weathering; moisture monitoring;

    Sammanfattning : Many failures of external walls made of porous buildingmaterials are caused by excessive moisture content,particularly after driving rain and under long duration ofmoist conditions. Lack of sufficient protection againstexposure conditions is one of the reasons for external wallsprematurely demonstrating failures, i.e. LÄS MER
