11. Three-dimensional T1 quantification techniques for assessment of cartilage quality using dGEMRIC
Sammanfattning : Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common chronic disease and one of the major global causes for functional disabilities. The disease is characterized by loss and degradation of cartilage, commonly affecting the knees and hips. LÄS MER
12. Electrosurgical plasma-mediated ablation for application in dermal wound and cartilage debridement - Biochemical, microbiological and clinical effects
Sammanfattning : The state of matter known as plasma has in the latest decades been investigated within different areas of medical treatment. The work presented in this thesis has focused on a specific type of plasma-based electrosurgical treatment modality (Coblation®) and its biochemical, microbiological and clinical effects on treatment of cartilage and of dermal wounds. 14. Human studies evaluating dGEMRIC as a prognostic tool for knee osteoarthritis
Sammanfattning : Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common joint disorder worldwide, causing joint pain and stiffness. The current gold standard for diagnosing knee OA is radiography. However, the disease has often progressed well beyond the point of no return once radiographic cartilage changes become visible. LÄS MER
15. Articular and epiphyseal cartilage : its formation, maintenance and repair
Sammanfattning : Long bones develop via a series of ordered processes, initiated from mesenchymal stem cell condensation, cartilage anlagen formation, followed by central cell hypertrophy and vascular invasion and the finalized by the formation of primary and secondary ossification centers (SOC), where the latter is also called endochondral ossification. As long bone develops, it can be distinguished in to several morphologically distinct parts: the main shaft of a long bone, called diaphysis; a narrow disc of growth plate, providing a continuous supply of chondrocytes for longitudinal growth; a thin layer of articular cartilage at the ends of epiphysis, supporting joint movement, and a SOC, sandwiched between the two pieces of cartilage.
