  1. 1. Assessment of increased upper airway resistance in snorers. Methodological and diagnostic considerations

    Författare :Sören Berg; Lund näs- och halssjukdomar Öron-; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; arousals.; pharyngeal pressure; intrathoracic pressure; hypopnea; respiratory ventilation; oxygenation; Non apneic snorers; upper airway obstruction; Otorhinolaryngology; audiology; auditive system and speech; Otorinolaryngologi; audiologi; hörsel- och talorganen;

    Sammanfattning : Sleep-related partial upper airway obstruction may cause increased morbidity and mortality, but diagnosis and treatment of patients is varying and inconsistent. The present studies were aimed to evaluate presently applied indirect methods for assessing respiratory ventilation and to investigate the value and accuracy in estimating upper airway resistance during sleep by measuring intrathoracic pressure variation with a microchip catheter in the esophagus. Sammanfattning : Burnout and Sleep The overall aim of this thesis was to describe the physiological characteristics of sleep in persons with burnout and the relation between sleep and a number of physiological stress markers. The aim was also to evaluate the diurnal pattern of subjective sleepiness and fatigue across workday and weekend, and to describe the experiences of time preceding burnout from a life world perspective. Sammanfattning : When anti-epileptic drugs fail, and epilepsy surgery is found unfeasible or ineffective, there remains a group of at least 25% of children with epilepsy in whom seizure control cannot be achieved. Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is an adjunctive treatment for medically refractory epilepsy. LÄS MER

    Sammanfattning : Background: Patients with sleep apnea have frequent apneas and hypopneas during sleep. Apneas can be either central or obstructive. The apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) is the mean number of apneas and hypopneas per hour of sleep. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Burnout: a matter of impaired recovery?

    Författare :Marie Söderström; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP;

    Sammanfattning : The general aim of this thesis work was to investigate physiological and subjective markers of recovery from stress in order to identify and discuss possible risk factors precipitating burnout, as well as factors related to recovery from burnout and return to work. In particular, sleep and unwinding during leisure time, in relation to burnout, were in focus in the four papers included in this thesis. LÄS MER
