21. A special role of Na,K-ATPaseand its molecular partners for astrocyte function
Sammanfattning : Astrocytes are glial cells that express several specific transporters and channels with specialized functions to maintain water, ion and neurotransmitter concentrations in order to preserve normal neuronal function. Astrocytes express two catalytic isoforms of plasma membrane enzyme Sodium Potassium-ATPase (Na,K-ATPase), that are essential for several of astrocyte’s functions. LÄS MER
22. The importance of Foxi1 expression in kidney and inner ear
Sammanfattning : The forkhead (FOX) genes comprise a family of transcription factors involved in generegulation in both embryonic and adult tissue. Foxi1 is expressed in the kidney andthe developing inner ear. We examined the significance of Foxi1 in these two organsand explain the molecular mechanisms behind the phenotype seen in Foxi1 deficientmice. LÄS MER
23. Glucose and glycerol transport in adipocytes from a structural perspective
Sammanfattning : Adipocytes are crucial energy reservoirs to maintain metabolic homeostasis of glucose and lipids in the human body.Glucose transporters (GLUTs) and aquaporins (AQPs) play an important role in metabolic regulation of glucose andlipids in human adipocytes. LÄS MER
24. LXR and aromatase knock-out mice : animal models providing insight into human diseases
Sammanfattning : In our characterization of mouse strains carrying mutations in nuclear receptor and aromatase genes we have found phenotypes which resemble four human diseases: benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), Sjögren s syndrome (SS), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. The work in this thesis was designed to understand the roles of LXRalpha, LXRbeta and aromatase in development of these diseases and to investigate whether these animal models help us (1) to understand the etiology of the corresponding human diseases and (2) to develop new therapeutic approaches for the treatment of these diseases. 25. Developing a Porcine Model to Study the Glymphatic System
Sammanfattning : The glymphatic system is a brain-wide solute clearance system that has developed in the brain to clear metabolic waste during sleep. This clearance is mediated by advective fluxes of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) along perivascular spaces (PVS) and through the brain. LÄS MER
