1. The Cyanophyte Arthrospira Fusiformis in African Waters - Eco-Physiology and Potential Use in Tropical Aquaculture
Sammanfattning : The cyanoprokaryote (blue-green algae) genus Arthrospira occurs in saline, alkaline tropical waters of Africa, Asia, and Central America. Traditionally Arthrospira has been used as a food supplement by the Kanembu tribe of Lake Chad and Aztecs living in the valley of Mexico City. LÄS MER
2. NMR metabolomics and lipid analyses in salmonid tissue : response to alternative feeds
Sammanfattning : Salmonids are fatty fish and contain high amounts of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, beneficial in human nutrition. However, the aquaculture industry has expanded greatly in recent decades, increasing demand for fishmeal (FM) and fish oil (FO) for fish feed, while the supply of fish raw materials has remained static or declined. 3. Integrated Agriculture and Aquaculture Systems (IAA) for Enhanced Food Production and Income Diversification in Tanzania
Sammanfattning : Aquaculture production in Tanzania has increased in recent years, responding to an increased demand for fish, partly because of an increasing population and declining catches of wild fish. However, the current aquaculture production is still low, dominated by small scale farming systems, that are struggling with a number of challenges such as lack of improved fish breeds, feeds, technical skills and low adoption rates. 4. Metabolomics as a tool to evaluate salmonid response to alternative feed ingredients
Sammanfattning : Aquaculture has largely expanded in the last decades to satisfy the growing market demands for fish products. Fishmeal and fish oil, which are traditionally used in salmonid feeds, are becoming unsustainable. Development of aquafeeds based on alternative ingredients are needed to overcome the ecological challenges. LÄS MER
5. Evaluation of locally available feed resources for Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in Rwanda
Sammanfattning : Aquaculture was introduced in Rwanda in the 1940s as an extensive pond-based system but the sector has gained in popularity during the past two decades, resulting in greater numbers of fish ponds and a corresponding increase in demand for quality fish feeds for sustainable aquaculture production. The aim of this thesis was to identify, sample and evaluate the nutritive value of some locally available feed ingredients that could be used by fish farmers producing Nile tilapia. LÄS MER
