1. Appendicitis : Epidemiology and diagnosis
Sammanfattning : The study concerns appendicitis, its epidemiology and diagnosis, and the outcome of appendectomy. A population based cohort of 9,274 patients undergoing appendectomy in 1969 to 1990 in Jönköping County was retrospectively studied, and 502 patients admitted for suspected appendicitis to the hospitals in Jönköping and Eksjö between October 1992 and December 1993 were prospectively studied. 2. Antibiotic therapy as single treatment of acute appendicitis
Sammanfattning : ABSTRACT BACKGROUND Appendectomy has been the established treatment of acute appendicitis during the last century, regarded as a simple and safe procedure, although hampered with postoperative complications and increased standard mortality. Modern research has indicated that selected patients with acute appendicitis can be treated by antibiotic therapy alone. LÄS MER
3. Extracellular matrix remodelling proteases in acute appendicitis and their impact on appendiceal perforation
Sammanfattning : Abstract Background Appendicitis is associated with varying degradation of extracellular matrix involved in tissue injury. The principal aim of this study was to investigate whether immunoreactive techniques could illustrate the course and severity of appendicitis and separate the different inflammatory grades, phlegmonous, gangrenous and perforated appendicitis, from each other and from uninflamed appendix. 4. Paediatric surgical care in Sweden. Studies on incidence, outcome and access
Sammanfattning : Abstract Background: Advanced paediatric surgery is increasingly centralised in Sweden in order to improve treatment outcomes and reduce surgical risks. However, the overall need for surgery in the paediatric population has not been estimated, and the association between geographic access to surgical facilities and timely treatment for common surgical conditions in children is largely unknown. 5. Inflammation and prostate carcinogenesis : influence of immune characteristics and early-adulthood exposure to inflammatory conditions on prostate cancer risk
Sammanfattning : Chronic inflammation has been implicated in the development of several types of cancer, and evidence from observational and animal studies suggests that it may play a role also in prostate carcinogenesis. Recent observations have brought Cutibacterium acnes (C. acnes) forward as a possible causative agent in pro-oncogenic prostatic inflammation. LÄS MER
