  1. 1. Fate and transport of POPs in the aquatic environment : with focus on contaminated sediments

    Författare :Sarah Josefsson; Karin Wiberg; Mats Tysklind; Kjell Leonardsson; Jonas S Gunnarsson; Jussi Kukkonen; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; bioturbation; bioirrigation; bioaccumulation; secondary sources; buried contaminants; sediment remediation; active capping; thin-layer capping; Marenzelleria spp.; Baltic Sea; polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins; polychlorinated dibenzofurans; polychlorinated biphenyls; hexachlorobenzene; octachloro¬styrene; polybrominated diphenyl ethers; PCDD Fs; PCBs; HCB; OCS; PBDEs; water sampling; passive sampling; particulate fraction; freely dissolved; apparently dissolved; colloid; organic carbon; activated carbon; lignin; sediment-to-water flux; spring bloom; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi; Persistent organic compounds; Persistenta organiska föreningar; Environmental Science; miljövetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are hydrophobic substances that readily sorb to organic matter in particles and colloids instead of being freely dissolved in the water phase. This sorption affects the bioavailability and environmental transport of the POPs. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Microbially induced concrete degradation in subsea tunnels - Community structure of biofilms from sprayed reinforced concrete in the Oslofjord tunnel

    Författare :Sabina Karacic; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; microbial community structure; concrete deterioration; biocorrosion; 16S rRNA gene sequences; biofilm; subsea tunnel;

    Sammanfattning : Microbially induced concrete deterioration has been discovered in several Norwegian subsea tunnels with significant disintegration of the calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) and steel fibre corrosion in areas with leakages of saline groundwater. Complex microbial biofilm activity together with abiotic attack from saline ground water, with high concentrations of Cl−, SO42−, Mg2+ and HCO3−, are responsible for the degradation in the specific subsea tunnel environment. 3. 3. Nutrient Dynamics and Exchanges Between a Mangrove Forest and a Coastal Embayment: Chwaka Bay, Zanzibar

    Författare :Salim Mohammed; Frank Dehairs; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; zoologi; Zoology;

    Sammanfattning : Nutrient dynamics and exchanges were studied in the Mapopwe Creek, a tidally dominated mangrove lined waterway, and a shallow lagoon in Chwaka Bay, Zanzibar, in order to assess whether there was any ecological coupling between the mangrove forest and adjacent ecosystems. In this study it was found that seasonal terrestrial input sources and benthic microalgal uptake strongly influenced the concentrations and distribution of dissolved nutrients in the system. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Mechanisms of below-ground carbon cycling in subarctic ecosystems

    Författare :Maria Olsrud; Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskap; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; cartography; climatology; Fysisk geografi; geomorfologi; marklära; kartografi; klimatologi; pedology; geomorphology; Physical geography; subarctic tundra; phosphorous mobilization; organic acids; open top chamber experiment; 15N natural abundance; Ericoid mycorrhizas; global change; 14C pulse-labelling; Carbon allocation;

    Sammanfattning : Some components of the below-ground carbon (C) cycle in terrestrial ecosystems are still poorly understood. A better understanding will be necessary to predict adequately the impacts of global change factors on C cycling and storage, especially in high-latitude ecosystems, where much of the C is stored below-ground. 5. 5. Ecology across Boundaries : Food web coupling among and within ecosystems

    Författare :Pia Bartels; Peter Eklöv; Lars J. Tranvik; Daniel E. Schindler; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; cross-ecosystem; food web; habitat coupling; terrestrial-aquatic linkages; subsidy; allochthonous; lake ecosystem; population divergence; trait variation; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestrisk; limnisk och marin ekologi; Freshwater ecology; Limnisk ekologi; Biology; Biologi; Biologi med inriktning mot limnologi; Biology with specialization in Limnology;

    Sammanfattning : Cross-boundary movements of energy and material are ubiquitous. Freshwater ecosystems receive nutrients, dissolved, and particulate organic matter from adjacent terrestrial ecosystems, whereas terrestrial ecosystems mainly receive prey organisms and detritus deposited by physical processes such as floods from freshwater ecosystems.
