1. Overlapping Neural Substrates of Alcohol- and Anxiety-Related Behavior in the Rat
Sammanfattning : Alcohol use is a leading cause of death and disease worldwide. A large part of this disease burden is associated with alcohol use disorder (AUD), a diagnostic category characterized by excessive use in spite of negative consequences ("compulsive use"), a loss of control over intake, and choice of alcohol over natural rewards. 2. Influence of serotonin on anxiety-like behavior in rat
Sammanfattning : It is well-established that serotonin is involved in the regulation of mood and behaviour, partly implied by the therapeutic effect of prolonged treatment with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) on mood and anxiety disorders. However, the mechanisms behind the paradoxical exacerbation of anxiety described during initial treatment, as well as behind the therapeutic effects of prolonged treatment with SSRIs, remain poorly understood. 3. Brain neurotrophin levels and mouse behavior : relationship to environmental influences
Sammanfattning : All normal functions over the lifetime of an animal are based on a dynamic balance of at least three fundamental elements: brain, environment and behaviour. This thesis investigated different aspects of these three elements and revealed novel interactions of brain neurotrophins, environmental influences and emotional behaviour in mice. LÄS MER
4. Effect of elevated pCO2 and environmental oxazepam on the behavior and physiology of teleost fish
Sammanfattning : This doctoral thesis investigated the effect of two aquatic pollutants on the behavior and physiology of teleost fish: i) elevated concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the context of ocean acidification and ii) low concentrations of the anxiolytic pharmaceutical oxazepam in the context of pharmaceutical pollution.Anthropogenic emissions of CO2 are lowering the pH of the oceans. 5. Examining Female Resilience to Early Environmental Influences : Short- and long-term consequences on behaviour, HPA axis activity and alcohol intake after prolonged maternal separation
Sammanfattning : Early-life experiences are an important factor influencing further development of the individual. Adverse experiences early in life, such as various kinds of abuse or neglect, are types of early-life stress that can adversely affect an individuals health, as well as contribute to the development of an array of disorders later in life.
